Are you sure?????

Ok! Well im still not sure about this.... What EXACTLY is the difference between the mottled and black mallard? If you say the white strip on the bottom the DUCK UNLIMITED I.D chart on there web site shows a little white strip this this one.....??????

yak'em-n-stack'em 11-17-2009 11:30 PM

i call that a black mallard.

look at the beak

Fishmaster 11-17-2009 11:31 PM

i'd like to know before the lady mounting it for me rights the wrong name of the duck on the plate....! D:

BossHog 11-17-2009 11:33 PM

Ive killed thousands of mottle ducks and never a blackduck, but that does look a little different than any mottle duck Ive every killed, I would say blackduck but more pics would help.

Fishmaster 11-17-2009 11:35 PM

What angle, i only took a million pics, at the time i thought it was a blackduck.....

black duck

BossHog 11-17-2009 11:40 PM

Most mottle ducks have that more greenish purple patch that duck looks almost like a solid blue patch and the body is darker than most mottle ducks

Fishmaster 11-17-2009 11:41 PM

soo,, Blackduck?

SULPHITE 11-17-2009 11:43 PM

http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...a%3DN%26um%3D1

scroll down...mottled and black together

SULPHITE 11-17-2009 11:44 PM

A good rule of thumb on speculum coloration to distinguish Mallards from Mottled Ducks and Black Ducks is:

Mallard : 2 white stripes (top and bottom)
Mottled Duck: 1 white stripe (bottom)
Black Duck: 0 white stripes

yak'em-n-stack'em 11-17-2009 11:45 PM

its so much darker than mottled ducks, but the white makes you think its a mottled

but go look at d.u's i.d thing and the black duck DOES have a lil white on the bottom, soo idk:confused::confused:

SULPHITE 11-17-2009 11:55 PM

more I look at it may be a black duck????

Fishmaster 11-17-2009 11:58 PM

Good keep looking at it, haha it's getting mounted as we speak i mean TYPE!

Jordan 11-18-2009 09:26 AM

say... mottled duck.. or black duck on the plate

adamsfence 11-18-2009 10:43 AM

or you could just put a big "?"

Hopedale Hustler 11-18-2009 10:50 AM

no man thats a mottled duck no doubt....ive killed hundreds they get dark like that esp. early in the year sometimes....if it was a black stripe you wouldnt have a small distinguishing white stripe on the bottom of its color patch.....or maybe i couldve just been shooting black ducks the whole time and didnt know it..but i think its a mottled

Fishmaster 11-18-2009 10:54 AM

Take a look at this.......

http://www.ducks.org/media/hunting/w...blackDuck1.jpg

SULPHITE 11-18-2009 10:57 AM

I saw that too FM...not sure but DU may have made a mistake???

Feesherman 11-18-2009 10:59 AM

I cannot see your picture but I will tell you how to tell for sure if it is a drake. A mottled will have a black spot on the lower part of the bill right where it meets the face, a black will not. I wish I could somehow see your picture and then I'd be able to tell you.

BossHog 11-18-2009 01:03 PM

Heres a good link with pics to tell the difference and notice the black duck does have a thin white line.

http://www.greglasley.net/motblk.html

Jordan 11-18-2009 01:57 PM

Just make the tag on the plaque say... "Guess this duck"

all star rod 11-18-2009 02:07 PM

It looks lake a "BLACK DUCK"....very dark colors and the bill is dark.

SULPHITE 11-18-2009 02:28 PM

Thats a mottled duck...its a mottled

Mottle duck

huntin fool 11-18-2009 08:51 PM

its a mottle...its a dark one, but a mottle

BossHog 11-18-2009 09:58 PM

Im not saying its a black duck, chances are its a mottle duck and I it probably is , but I love how many of yall are experts and say its a mottle duck without any prove or evidence to back up what yall are saying. Yes Ive never seen a blackduck killed around here but hey dont say it isnt if you dont have proof. Every website on the internet shows the white line being on blackducks too so without better pics explain to me how any of yall know for sure its a mottle duck.

The light brown etching on the feathers is to big. Black duck is a very small light brown line around the dark of the feather

From what i've searched, all the pictures i've seen a black duck has a darker bill than the bright yellow like this one. I can pull pics from other forums if i need to prove what i've found it to be.

SHouldn't the taxidermist be able to I.D it?????

huntin fool 11-18-2009 10:07 PM

Read again fool from ur website.....The adult Mottled Duck is 44–61 cm (17–24 in) long from head to tail. It has a dark body, lighter head and neck, orange legs and dark eyes. Both sexes have a shiny green-blue (wing patch), which is not bordered with white as with the . Males and females are similar, but the male's bill is bright yellow, whereas the female's is deep to pale orange, occasionally lined with black splotches around the edges and near the base.

All male mallards either mottle, black, or green head have the same bill.

"but the male's bill is bright yellow"
