Powerpole or Talon?

Looking to buy one soon but didn't know which is better. Probably gonna go with an 8ft because I'll also have the ipilot link for deeper water. Will be put on my 22ft Xpress. Any suggestions?

meaux fishing 05-12-2014 09:52 PM

powerpole hands down. Ive never owned a talon, but from what I heard I never will

talons are louder, break more, and dont hold as well. Powerpole customer service is second to none also. Ive had a pp since 09 and the couple of times I had problems they were very helpful and even sent me replacement parts quick and free of charge.

Man was about to get a deal on a talon but now starting to rethink it with all the powerpole votes.

I've had both, do not buy a Talon.

Power pole.

Cripley 05-12-2014 11:01 PM

I currently own a Talon bought it last year wish I went power pole

It's loud

It get stuck easy when current is pushing against it

Does not hold as well

Did I mention very loud

Yes it's cheaper I know but don't make the same mistake

CaryLab 05-12-2014 11:04 PM

Well looks like its a powerpole for me. I'm smart enough to learn from other peoples mistakes. I'm looking at the 8ft Sportsman.

rk3 05-13-2014 05:08 AM

My buddy had a Talon on the boat he bought, fished with it less than 2 months and switched to a PowerPole…said the Talon was junk when I was asking the same question as you.

PP 10' Blade

Montauk17 05-13-2014 06:49 AM

I agree spend the extra money now instead of later and go with the 10' blade.

Nitramiii 05-13-2014 08:41 AM

Get the 8 if you're fishing 6' of water or less. Get the 10 if you expect deeper water. They only offered the 8 when I purchased mine, but wish I had the 10. The 10 means less anchor pulling.

CaryLab 05-13-2014 09:11 AM

I'm thinking just the 8ft because I'll have the ipilot for deeper water

I love my ipilot, which is why I have not spent the money on a pp. I am leaning towards a stick-it anchor for the times that I know I will be there for a while.

I have the 8ft and the ipilot and it works, there are times I wish I had the 10ft though, but I use the powerpole less now that I have the ipilot.

Def get the 10' pp wish mine were 10s do not get a talon they are junk. The universal bracket system they have is real ****ty looking too.

What's your experience with a talon that would make you say they are junk?

fishwater 05-13-2014 10:57 AM

I install 20 to one powerpoles to talons. The talon moi ting brackets are universal and huge and just junky. The problems I see with the talons is they get stuck and you have to rock them out sometimes, and they will blow a fuse is moved to far then you have to crank them up Manually. A talon also weights about 65 lbs where a pp is around 30. With pp you have a problem you talk with someone the first time no automated service like with minn kota. When people come in and want talons I try real hard to get them to go with pp

Any word on the new talons, they just came out with a 10 and 12 ft. versions which are suppose to have a setting for softer bottoms to eliminate them getting stuck.

ifsteve 05-13-2014 12:54 PM

There used to be a video on you tube that showed a side by side comparison between the two. Real life use. It showed why PP is the way to go over Talon. Not sure why that video was taken down? But I ended up with a PP and have no regrets. That video was clear to me. Talon sucked.

Power pole

drbones 05-13-2014 02:36 PM

What size boat? I had a 22' triton with talon and liked it. Bought a 24' that had a 8' powerpole on it and switched to a 12' talon. I found that the powerpole did not hold as well especially in rough water or rapidly changing tides. The new talon are not as loud.

Have fished with both- power pole is the way to go.

fishwater 05-13-2014 03:24 PM

I have only put one 12' on a boat since they came out they do have a setting for rough water and soft bottom but I don't know how well it works. I have never had a problem with my pp not holding unless it was in 7 1/2 ft of water but that's with any anchor system on a rough lake.

If you go with a talon, I have a new MinnKota aluminum jackplate mount swival bracket for sale. You can even mount a power pole to this bracket. PM me if interested

I was in la flounder fishing alot last year and watched guys with talons and pp. The pp is more popular now but the talon is gaining ground around here. When a big ship came by most of the guys with pp were washed off their spot. Even had a 20' aluminum that has dual pp and he was washed off several times right in front of me. The talons just swung around and stayed. I saw one talon that didn't hold when a ship came buy. But we have big dbl anchors out and we got washed off spot. Usually we are set with our anchors down.
At rayburn last week we pulled up to Caney boat launch and was wondering what it was with all the blue lights at boat ramp. There was 3 intercoastal type bass boats and all had talons. I question them about geting stuck and they said in soft mud you may have to rock the boat but never had to ratchet up yet. They also said with the soft bottom mode that should solve the problem that some say they have. The soft bottom mode is now on the 10' and 12' but will probably show up on the smaller ones later.
I was at the houston boat show this January and a dealer told me not to go with the talon?

Montauk17 05-13-2014 06:20 PM

Try this with a talon and see what happens.

Don't know by experience because they haven't seen the water "YET", but I just had my PowerPoles installed this past weekend. I got the 10' blades. I'll know next week just how awesome they perform.

Visco 05-15-2014 06:48 PM

pKane3, nice set up you have there.

Used my talon for a RLD just the other day. Didn't harm it at all.

I think this pp / talon debate is kind of like a ford vs chevy thing.

I know people with both with no issues

SGib 05-16-2014 09:01 AM

If the rods on the 10ft are longer couldn't you just put it in your 8ft and gain a little? Or is just the swing arm above the rod longer?

juicegoose 05-20-2014 07:06 AM

Power pole all the way for the reasons already stated.
Here is why I'll stick with them. I emailed customer support about a busted reservoir cap. I knew they sold a cap but I figured it was worth a shot to see if they would cover it under warranty. Not only did the response email simply contain a tracking number for the cap but the package arrived with a quart of green marine hydraulic oil too!!!

Now that is customer service. My power pole is an 08 by the way.

Want to throw this out there for everyone to know.

Stick-It Anchor pins has a no shipping sale going on right now, this is roughly a $30 saving.

http://www.shop.stickitanchorpins.com/addtocart.sc

For only $70 this is an awesome deal.

cajun bill 05-27-2014 09:18 PM

quick question: I finally got to use my PP for the first time last week. Couldn't be happier. Only question I have is how does one know how far to "stick it". The first time I tried it was at the landing and I apparently stuck it so deep, I had to rock the boat back and forth to get it up. No problems after that, but I'm just curious. I'm guessing that the depth finder has a lot to do with how far one can expect to stick it, but is there some other method to know how far down one has to stick it or just experiment until the amount of depth appears to halt the boats progress. Just looking for tips.
