30-06 ballistic tips suck
sunday i shot a 6 point at 40 yards with my browning bar2 safari with a 50mm nikon monarch 2 scope at 4o yards dropped in its tracks. deer got up and now cannot find it. so today i shot a 150lb spike at 100 yards dropped it and she got up and leaked no blood and had to get a dog to track her for 70 yards from where i shot her. found 4 drops of blood. had to search for thr entrance wound and the bullet did not even go all the way through the deer, i am shooting 150 grain ballistic tips. finally found the entrace wound and it was a perfect clean shot right behind the shoulder. so yeah i am going to a 165 or 180 grain bowtie bullet cause something has got to give. anysuggestions out there

I agree.......I have shot the Core-locks for 20+ years in my .243.
I don't know why so many people spend a lot more money on bullets that don't always get the job done. Over the years, I have made a few "missed placed" shots, but the bullet still killed the deer. A few years ago, I shot a Buck while it was moving fairly fast. I stopped it once, but could not get a shot. It would not stop again and I took the shot in the next opening. The bullet hit high....between the lungs and the Backstrap. What would expect the out come of this shot....with "only" a 100 gr .243 cal. rifle @ 60 yd distance? The 150 lb buck dropped like a rock......and never moved. The exception might be for shooting long range [250+ yard ???]. The rough looking tip on the Core-lock bullets, just dosen't look like it would be accurate at longer distances. |
ballistic tips have problems delivering full impact because of bullet fragmentation (failure) . I got two words for you, Core Lokt
|
:amen: Core Lokts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
Same here had to make a friend change from the plastic tips because we would always have to track down his deer. He was making good shots but never knocked down any of his deer. He hit one in the front shoulder and the bullet broke up into a million pieces and most of them didnt make it out of the shoulder. Core lokts is what he uses now and the last 3 dropped right where he shot them.

Not knockin the core lokts, but i have never lost a deer shooting ballistic tips. The furthest I ever had to track one was about 25 yds. Last year I shot the winchester XP3 balliisitic tip 130 gr, and dropped two in their tracks. Different strokes I guess. I shoot a .270. I'll let ya'll know after the weekend how they perform again.

I've just always had luck with the Core Lokts so I never changed. Why mess with a good thing??

Quick question...
My brother shoots 130 gr. ballistic tips in his .270, if he changes bullets to a non ballistic tip but stays with the same grain, will it affect his shot? My dad just called and he only has 1 bullet left for his rifle and we can't find any .270 ballistic tips anywhere, just Federal Premiums. |
I've done it before, but I would shoot a couple first to check accuracy.

It could be another name brand of ballistic tip & the gun may not group at all. Be sure & shoot several rounds through it anytime you change anything! |
Thanks guys, that's what I thought. I was finally able to find a couple of boxes at Academy.
|
IMO.....any bullet can be used for a shot under 100 yards and will not change the "point of impact" enough to make any difference when shooting a deer.
All bullets [of the same weight] will hit about the same spot.....probably less than 2" difference at 100 yards. |
guys thanks for the info and believe tonight i will be going to buy a box of core lokt bullets. and i am gonna bump up to a 165 grain instead of the 150 grain. this has been a very informative thread for me. thanks to all.

yeah but i don't wanna take the chance. because if a 12 point walks out the last thing i am worried about is meat destruction. on other deer ust gotta choose good shot placement and pray it plays out without to much damage
|
get federal accubonds or the barnes. expensive but well worth the money. i like the core lokts for anything under 200.
|
I have killed deer with ballistic tips and core lock. Both have killed my deer for me. I can shoot both at 200yrds and only 1/4" difference with 150 grain in the 30-06.
|
I have only killed 3 deer and killed them all with ballistic tip none just drop but i think it was more on me and shot placement.....
|
I shoot ballistic tips in my 30-06 and I have only had one that ran since I switched I love them hope I don't have your problems
|
My uncle had a perfect shot on a monster buck up in Nebraska, but he never found anything but a couple drops of blood. The property owner looked for a few days after he left and they never found it. He was shooting a 7mm ballistic tip. I'm not sure of the brand though. I shoot 130 gr Federal Sierra Game Kings or Core Lokts in my .270.
|
Wish I could find the video I was looking for but it shows several different bullets being fired into ballistic gel. The ballistic tip performed poorly. It basically desintegrated on impact and had little penetration.
|
I shot 2 deer (does) both with Remington Core Loct with a .270, the only tracking I had to do was back to the camp to get the four wheeler.
|
My brother was shooting 140 grain ballistic tips in his 7mm-08 and having to track deer further than he thought he should have to. One bullet went in behind the shoulder and came out straight down out the bottom of the chest and the deer ran quite a ways. After that he switched to Core Loks and he loves them. He's killed about 80 deer with them and just raves about them. I used his gun to kill two deer about a month ago and both dropped on the spot with complete penetration. They are just a tough, dependable bullet.

I not sure but I am curious as to why he kept callin his spike a she? |
I just re-read this thread.
Not one single "BAD" remark about Cor-Lock bullets......most people like them, no or little tracking, they are cheeper than other bullets........................................... ........... Yet, hunters buy other bullets [$$$].........and complain when the Deer runs off and they have a hard time finding it. |
core lokts are the shiznit .three deer and numerous hogs.dead in there tracks. thank the lord cus i cant track worth snot
|
I shoot cheap winchester bullets in my 7mm mag. I killed 4 deer last year , 2 at 300 yards. 8 pt made it about 20 yards, the other one dropped in his tracks. Ive shot different kinds of bullets. its all about shot placement.
|
i have had jacket/core separation (bullet failure) with the powerpoint winchesters in a 7 rem mag.
