baiting for shrimp

What do you guys use to bait areas for cat netting shrimp. I'm headed to the rock later and was wondering what your recipes were. Info appreciated!

melt blocks. But it used to illegal to use bait for throwing a cast net, you better confirm before you go.

I have always seen soft canned cat food used for cast netting shrimp or bait fish, punch a bunch of holes in the can with ice pick and toss a few around the area. you want the kind that's a patty type and not the gravy bits.

cant tell you why but the dog food doesn't work very well

T-TOP 07-09-2014 01:32 PM

always used pogey meal or melt.

Pogey meal and flour mixed with a little water. Make some dough balls and toss out. Using cans can get you a ticket for littering

Where can Pogey meal be bought?

jchief 07-09-2014 01:44 PM

Marshland Tobacco, I think is the name. South of Jerrys same side of road.

Good point. Don't know if they have it now. Got some there in October.

Dry dog food pellets.

CHUM STAIN 07-09-2014 02:26 PM

Cat food idea would be simple, but dont want to litter. Pogy meal it is. Do you let the balls dry in the sun before use. Do they sink?

jchief 07-09-2014 04:43 PM

No, don't let them dry, and yes they sink.

jchief 07-09-2014 04:48 PM

Marshland does have it. 5# for about $11.

Pat Babaz 07-10-2014 02:21 AM

Range cubes from the feed store work almost as good as pogey meal and less hassle to use. Pogey meal is #1 though

swamp snorkler 07-10-2014 06:14 AM

If you throwing near a cut you don't need it. The shrimp will naturally get pushed through there anyway.

elittle51 07-10-2014 07:54 AM

rabbit food pellets work great

CHUM STAIN 07-10-2014 07:59 AM

thanks guys. how long do you normally let them sit before casting on them? do you make them about the size of baseballs? how many balls per spot?

Quackhead62 07-10-2014 10:55 AM

I usually make them about the size of baseballs like you stated above. I'll usually throw out 3-4 balls and let them sit for 10-15 min. Then cast around them until the shrimp slow down. Then just repeat the steps above untill you catch your limit.

CHUM STAIN 07-10-2014 11:37 AM

AWESOME! I'm gonna give it a shot.

I second that, I have used everything, and rabbit pellets have always worked the best.

Good luck

simply tie a string on the can so you pick them up after

you wont get a ticket if its tied to a string so you can retrieve it

CHUM STAIN 07-20-2014 07:58 PM

I can do that with the string! I'll give it a shot.

CHUM STAIN 07-20-2014 07:58 PM

How do you prep the rabbit pellets? Do you just throw them out in the water or make a mixture???

jchief 07-20-2014 08:02 PM

Try this, mix pogie meal, rabit pellets, cat food, flour and water. Best of all worlds.

CHUM STAIN 07-20-2014 10:07 PM
