Big lake

I'm new to the site and planning a trip to big lake next week. Rented a cabin and taking my dad. We are relatively new to salt water fishing and have only been to big lake a couple of times. I have looked at maps and generally know the lake but not much about fishing it. Mainly would just like to find some reds and maybe a few trout. Just want for us to catch a few fish. We will be staying at Herbert's. Can anyone give me any tips or point me in the right direction of where to start?

x2.. easy way to make the trip count! And tell them what you want to learn and they will do everything they can to help you.

Beat the bank or fish the weirs for reds. Look for birds for trout. Go soak some mullet in the channel there is always something to pull on your line.

Thanks for the tips. I will give it hell. Would love to eventually take a guide trip but it's just not in the cards right now.

get you a hotspots map of the lake from Academy, mark a few of the reefs on your gps and give them a try. I always catch a few reds on a falling tide fishing the grass lines and ponds on the southeast end of the lake. White and chartruse tail Norton sand eels works good. Live shrimp under a popping cork is hard to beat but I prefer plastics and topwater

This time of year, if you have a little tide and good weather, go to the Jetties with live mullet or live shrimp. Don't pass up any birds in the lake heading south though.

Or you could just wait until Waltrip leaves his camp and follow him out wherever he goes... PPP!!! (Pilgrim's Potlicking Pride) :grinpimp::rotfl::spineyes::*****:

Louisiana Sportsman has many articles on Big Lake, some include coords.

I would first suggest a guide especially if you are starting to want to fish the lake more regularly lots of good guides out of Heberts best bang for your buck when you consider gas tracking fish and lures and live bait the cost becomes comparable. Other wise yes just go out look for birds and popping bait. the hotspots map does work well also.

If another boat is on the birds be courteous or just find another set.

bayouchub 07-24-2014 05:36 PM

Go with a guide and mark the spots you catch fish with a handheld gps in your pocket then take your boat early the next morning and beat the guide to the spots.

The navionics app has a decent tracking feature too.

Actually that is no big deal , you have other guides beat you to your spot before you have customer

I tell everyone who hires me that you can fish any spot you want 365 days a year ! I'm good enough that I know if someone is at a spot before me , I go find fish somewhere else !!

Depending on one spot to catch fish is petty much saying you can't catch some where else !!

I have over 1500 spots that I can fish anyday and one will not stop me from having a successful trip

1.37 spots per square mile to be precise, plausible.

Well let's make it personal why don't we. I get what he's saying, if a spot or two of his is taken, he has others that produce fish. Obviously some people are too ignorant to understand that.

Cripley 07-25-2014 12:02 AM

Ahhhhhh, the famous W fish off challenge.

Duck Butter 07-25-2014 08:33 AM

seriously, what you need to do is find the phone number to the wiers, call them the day you are going fishing to see if they are open.

If they are open, then you can go anywhere on the lake and catch fish.

If they are closed, you are 'waisting' your time and better go to Sabine
