Gumbo Cookoff????
I asked this in the events forum but thought it may get better traction here.
Anyone up for some head to head gumbo competition? Doesn't have to be a huge event just some guys having fun on a Saturday. Could raise a little money for little angels too. Just a thought. Need in put from our big cooks and our organizer. Bluechip, Eman, and Southern151. How many of y'all think this would be fun? |
I'll throw down. But it'll have to be after deer season. I'll fly the pilgrim flag proud
|
So what you're asking is "Would I come and show you how to make gumbo? " Lol....... Just thought I'd start the trash talking early. Lol.......
Seriously, sounds like a good idea! Of course the date would be the most difficult thing to figure out. How many people you think would attend? Minimum amount of gumbo? Our K of C gumbo cook-off requires a 3 gal. min. Any kind? Chicken, turkey, seafood? Everyone bring his own rice? Where would it be held? Cook on site or cook at home and bring out? |

Just a thought at this point and seeing how many else think it would be fun. My thought was something less formal. Just some guys throwing down and having some fun. Maybe someone has or knows someone with a business and let us set up there? I was thinking a fowl gumbo (chicken, duck, or combo of each) and has to be made on site. Veggies and meats can be cut up before hand but that's it. Looking for ideas from anyone interested. Hell i don't care if we cook for nothing more than bragging rights and maybe a lil sc cash. If we get ten guys to cook and pay a $20 entry fee that's $200 we could give an organization. That's if we don't sell any gumbo. Looking for ideas from anyone. |
Sig, it's gonna take more than some pretty pictures beat this Texan. Bring your A game. Lmao

I'm. Ready. Are ya'll?
|
Depends on the date with me.
I think it would be fun. And I'm not beyond paying my $20, boiling a pot of water, drinking a few beers and eating y'all's gumbo when ready lol.... Sometimes I cook for so many charity events and benefits that I get burnt out but I'm willing to throw in a $20 and come eat.... |
yeah, the date would be the determining factor for me. Heading out of town in October and lots of other stuff going on.
|
Just saw on Facebook that little angels has a cookoff on October 26. Could sign up for that and cook. Three catagories. $10 entry fee. Really thinking about doing that. Have to cook for 50 people.
|
February. It's cold, wet, and hunting season is closed. Perfect gumbo weather too. SigNate is not allowed to cook a gumbo until then. Errbody else start practicing.lol

Yall gonna be ad ad when a Texan shows Yall boys wassup on this gumbo game. If yt? think a La address is the determining prerequisite in cooking a roux or a gumbo, Yall are gonna be very disappointed.

Ain't even figured out if we can do this and the smack has started. Love it. |
it ain't just me, I'm bringing an elite TX Gumbo Krewe.....We have a secret recipe. Ya'll ever tried Jaegermeister gumbo?
|
Oct. 26 I'll be in north Alabama for :Kegtoberfest 2014". A group get together of Keg grill owners that I'm organizing. http://www.broilkingbbq.com/grills/keg/keg-series.html
Oh, and btw, I will be cooking a jambalaya and a gumbo up there as per requests. a couple of guys will be coming from Canada so I have to cook the REAL thing for them. Lol..... |
Gumbo must be fowl based. Chicken, duck, turkey, guinie (spelled that wrong) along with sausage, tasso, etc. No seafood.
$20 entry Cook own rice. Veggies and meat can be cut up before hand. Everything else is done on site. Roux included. 3 judges. Anonymous judges. Cooks don't see judges and vice versa. When its judging time you fix a cup for each judge with your number on it. If you don't place 1, 2, or3 you have to pay $200 sc cash to 1st place. $100 sc cash to 2cnd place and $50 sc cash to 3rd place. More ideas guys? |
I say let ALL the eaters be the judges. Charge a certain amount for tasting, and give everybody that buys tastes a way to vote for their favorites. I also like the idea of $1 a cup. give em a ticket to vote with for every 3 cups they purchase. Cook team with the most tickets at the end of the day wins. But I'm down with the rest of the rules. Also Feb. sounds good to me
|
Actually you can have the tasters vote "Peoples Choice" and have a few real judges for more fun.

I'm more of a taster than a competitor here, but I've got the 26th marked for some good eating. Please post here if you're plan to compete in this cook-off and I'll work harder to shake loose from the usual children's stuff and other events that crowd fall weekends. |

I'm in depending on timing. My business is right across the street from Parish Brewery. I doubt we could run out of beer. I will give them a shout and maybe they can open their doors and even participate.
One day, I will meet Sig and bow to his presence! RC |
|
Thanks Ragin_Cajun!
Nice trophy! Who was the winner that let you touch it? Lol............. |
And so it begins.
Nice job RC.... :) |
I'd roll to Broussard. Show dink wassup on that black iron roux game.
|
I checked out parish brewery's website. The beer sounds amazing. I'll chip in on a keg of canebreak
|
They were filled with beer! Nah...I was really holding them for the champ....lol
