Ready for the sharks
 

Last month fishing the beach at Elmer's (in the pass), we had a number of sharks break off with tail slaps so we're upping our game with a couple of Okuma reels with 500 yards of 80 lb power pro and long steel leaders.

Should do the trick....

Make the leaders at least 8'

That's the plan, but we've experienced some casting challenges with the longer leaders. Still working out the tradeoffs.

Anyone got a clue what the largest shark is that isn't going to spool us with 500 yards of 80 lb power pro? Could we really turn an 8 footer?

thats more then enough line they have little water depth ad they won't run straight out 500 yards you'll turn them before that good luck

i do suggest you get a belt those longer butt rods tend to hurt o those bigger fish lol

I was fishing at a rig when something took one of the baits and it just started swimming away from the rig. We untied and held on for the ride. After about 45 minutes and everyone taking a turn with the rod, we got the fish up close enough to see that it was a Hammerhead that was about 8 foot long.

It got off after making another run.

Get a kayak n paddle your baits out far instead of casting

I agree with the idea, but I'm a bit old for that and my sons haven't signed on for that yet. Looking into a drone to carry out and drop the baits.

I'm debating whether to pay the extra few hundred dollars for the camera/video. It is rare in Louisiana waters to have sufficient water clarity for the video to be really useful for scouting, the camera reduces the effective payload, and increases the loss should the drone crash into the Gulf.

The camera on there is very good quality. They are synced to your phone so u can watch live feed and control it that way. Have one at work to look at places can't get to on foot. It would go out about 800 yes if u had it in direct sight but would lose signal 300-400 yds if no visual and would come back to u on its own once it lost signal. They DO NOT FLOAT as is not even for one second. Ours went down on Fausae Pointe due to operator error. Whole lake issue 4 ft deep and it went down in the channel:rotfl: I could see u coming up with some great ideas for additions to put on the drone. They are real cool. Seen some with pontoons

What is the max wind you have flown them in?

One thing I really miss from back home is shark fishing. Granted, we were only catching 2-4 foot bull sharks up in the fresh/brackish reaches, but it was fun none the less. What sort of sharks are ya'll chasing? And any idea if there's any landbased spots to chase some small one's close to Lafayette?

My drone can fly in winds of 25mph with little to no problems.

We don't really take designated shark fishing trips, but target them a bit while fishing for bull reds, which is our main fishing interest. That puts us on the beaches and passes most of the time. We're not really targeting a species, just putting a chunk of bait out on a steel leader and seeing what happens. Of course, my boys are interested in landing the bigger ones that have broken off in the past.

Sorry, most of our fishing is either in Cameron or near GI. I would not know where to begin shark fishing near Laffy.

I know people that catch little ones off the beach and dock at cypremort pt state park in the summer. Which is strange cuz that's when the h 20 is pretty fresh.

Good luck buddy. I'm also in the process of putting together a rig for beach sharks. I think I'm gona go with a 14' meathunter super heavy rod so I can chunk the hell out of heavy baits. Still haven't decided on a reel yet. Also haven't told Tammy I'm buying more fishing gear.lol

Lots of ideas awaiting budgetary approval over here too.

Like sparky said. No problems in wind really. Flew it in 15 mph winds and it's pretty stable.

Thanks for the feedback. We don't usually fish in winds over 15 mph, but there are a lot of 10-15 mph days and it's nice to know it will work before we spend the $$$.
