Need a good Weed Eater

Im tried of buying weed eaters every year. What is a good brand to buy that will last. I don't have a big yard at all. It take me maybe 30 minutes to cut my grass. Any suggestions..... anyone has one to for sale?

Bdub 03-21-2015 07:15 PM

Poulan, bought mine a few years ago zero issues and cuts great...

Just checked its the 25cc model straight shaft

keakar 03-21-2015 07:15 PM

gas, cordless, or corded electric?

and how are they going bad? tis it he same part breaking down every time?

not sure what you are buying but the mid level priced equipt is what I always buy because its quality enough to last without paying top dollar just for a fancy name or fully equipt version.

FF_T_Warren 03-21-2015 07:18 PM

Shindaiwa is the bomb. Stihl is good too but I'd go shindaiwa. Things is a work horse and cranks on first or second pull since 2006. And 5 of those years was cutting several yards as a side job

Speck Attack 03-21-2015 07:19 PM

Had the same issues a few years ago.....made the investment for a Stihl trimmer....glad I did....best trimmer and blower...two pulls every time...:D

PaulMyers 03-21-2015 07:21 PM

Echo brand is great. I have 1 that is 11 years old and 1 that is 8 years old. Change the spark plug and air filter every year and never look back. Neither one has ever been in the shop.

alphaman 03-21-2015 07:24 PM

They just don't crank up. I just gave up on them. Lol
I don't remember the brand

bassfisher39 03-21-2015 07:30 PM

Shindaiwa is hard to beat. I been having mine about 10 years and haven't had any issues at all.

redaddiction 03-21-2015 07:45 PM

If you're not putting fuel stabilizer in your gas you will keep having problems. Letting them sit all winter will cause problems. Fuel varnishes up and ruins the diaphrams in the carbs so they don't pump correctly.

alphaman 03-21-2015 07:49 PM

That's the problem cheep + no gas treatment = broke weedeater

mriguy 03-21-2015 07:53 PM

I like Stihl. I buy the premix gas in a can that has stabilizers and no ethanol.

Just go buy a carb kit for it. It's an easy fix.

my dad did the same thing. every year I would clean the carb and filter getting it running good and the next year same thing needed to be done and he only used non-ethynol gas with fuel stabilizer yet it still gums up over winter.

he finally just gave up and bought a cordless battery one and a spare battery, with both of them charged he easily trims the whole yard and never has to fight with the damn thing to get it to run, plus its quiet and no gas or oil to mess with.

this is the one he bought http://www.homedepot.com/p/Ryobi-ONE...2052/202556442

been using it for 4 years now trouble free and he trims a 100x140 ft yard with it and gets about 3/4 way through before needing to swap batteries in it. I think he said he gets 20 minutes continual full speed running time on one battery

as others say, its mostly old gas leaving varnish in the carb, but fine dust fills the foam air filter and it gets clogged solid sometimes on those things so don't overlook the foam filter.

My dad bought a Shindaiwa when we moved into their new house when I was in second grade. He gave me that weedeater when I built my house and bought himself a brand new Sthil. 7 years later, I'm using that same Shindaiwa and he is on his second Sthil. I vote for Shindaiwa.

troy001 03-21-2015 08:53 PM

echo !

Dogface 03-21-2015 08:54 PM

Use Tru Fuel. Premixed and no ethanol. Home Depot has it and all the small engine shops sell it. You won't be sorry.

I have owned echo, shindawa, and now a Stihl This is over 35 years. All of them has been good. I cut and trim several tracks of land we own. I also did lawn maintenance in the past. Never had. Never any problem with any of these. Just wore them out after many hours and years of service. Good luck.

If you dump the gas back in the can after you use it and run the gas out of the motor you will never have carb problems.

Weed

Hey alphaman, go see Champagnes on morgan street, they sell stihl and great service, locally owned no big box store but prices are close if not better than box store, oh yeah did i mention excellent service after sale

Shindaiwa for sure my Dad still uses the one I used to use when I cut the grass in junior high and I'm 34. I got mine at Southland on Johnston right south of the mall.

Armand16 03-22-2015 03:13 AM

Redmax. The premix cans are the way to go.

Weed Eater

Stay away from the junk at lowes. Have a Stihl that is 14 yrs old and cranks easily. Changed the plug once and two head units that wore out. I burn about a tank of fuel each cutting.

Have to agree right there. Mine is almost 15 yrs old(purchased June 2001), in that time I only remember bringing it in once-maybe twice for service. Right now the only problem is the primer bulb is broken-but I choke it and it still starts.

Pull n Pray 03-22-2015 09:06 AM

Ecos are great. I've had mine for 7 years and it still runs good. It was even under water during hurricane Ike. I think they come with a 5 year warranty and are under $200.

4fish 03-22-2015 09:07 AM

Shindaiwa and be done with it

ryanjag07 03-22-2015 09:34 AM

I use echo and stihl products and have no issues. Your issue sounds like the carb which I would go by the recommendations above about the gas to solve that issue. If you choose to buy a new one than I would recommend any of the brands in their comercial series. They are built to have more run hours. But the infrequent use of one small yard you still need to do something about gas.

fishizzle 03-22-2015 10:12 AM

Shindaiwa! You will die before it will!

weedeater 03-23-2015 08:56 AM

I would recommend Echo, ONLY non ethonal gas with Echo mix (it contains stabilizer) and only mix what you can burn in less then 2 months and get a straight shaft so you can weedeat or edge with it plus it's easier on your back... I like buying from from shops that deal with lawn equipment vs box stores incase you need repairs done and cost will be very close at both

netmkr 03-23-2015 09:15 AM

Bought a Robin in 2006 @ Nolan's lawnmowers in Carencro in 2006 still going strong and no problems whatsoever

rardoin 03-23-2015 11:41 AM

Get one of these...low maintenance, free fuel and automated (like a Roomba for your yard):
https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/i...eNvbKH4pzWJL-q

I would also purchase one of these and you will never need to buy parts again:

Quackhead62 03-23-2015 01:10 PM

Shindaiwa by far the best weed eater i have owned cranks up after sitting up in the shed all winter long and it is just a amimal. Also you can get the blade atachments for clearing trails and cutting cane to brush duck blinds too.

keakar 03-23-2015 10:31 PM

it seams the consensus so far is, you have to buy a trimmer in the $300 range or it will be a piece of junk so you get what you pay for and if you want a good reliable trimmer that works when you need it then buy a $300 commercial name brand trimmer.

DaPointIsDaBomb 03-24-2015 06:21 AM

Don't buy any of that Japanese junk, buy 100% American and support our country. Hate seeing people buying Toyotas when they can get a good ol American made Ford. Hate a Chevy but still better than those overseas made yotas

But Yota trucks are made in USA now with non Union workers and have fewer foreign parts in them than most of the Big 3

Feesherman 03-24-2015 12:44 PM

Another for Shindawa

hardball 03-24-2015 03:37 PM

That's what I have too!! The day I bought it, I cleaned up about 800' of fence that was over grown with blackberry bushes and chicken trees. I put a set of gator blades on it and that thing melted right through it all!! I've used shindawa and red max also and really liked them too but that maruyama out does them both!

BuckingFastard 03-25-2015 06:54 AM

stihl or echo... youll never turn back. decide how powerful of one you need and make sure its the straight shaft.

Lil Silver 03-25-2015 07:23 AM

Got the Stihl "Kombi" system several years back. Can change the working end. Got the weed eater head, blower, and cultivator. Ends swap out in about 20 seconds. They also have the brush cutter head and a sweeper too I think. Got too many motors around the house already. Only one motor for these items this way.

.

About same size yard here...
Couple of years ago I bought a Ryobi 18v lithium kit, (the green one).
Now I have a drill, work light, circ saw, recip saw, blower, string trimmer, 4 batteries, and 3 smart chargers. And a corded electric chain saw. About to buy a Ryobi torque drill driver.

Let me tell you my life got much easier after losing about 2-3 small gas engine yard tools. Highly recommended for smaller yards. I catch grief from my co-workers about all this sissy yard gear, but you know what? It ALWAYS starts, no more gas cans, different mixes, out of gas, no starts, repairs, etc etc ! :rotfl: The Lawn Boy 4cycle self prop pushmower gets non-eth, and that's it. Best thing I ever did!~
