mallardhead 03-26-2015 06:45 PM

Quit it!!!! Lol making me hungry

meat killer 86 03-26-2015 07:50 PM

I eat so much honey. I feel that if I stop eating as much as I do I would probably lose about 15lbs. Lol.

Forget it. I'll just stay chunky. Hahaha

Cappy 03-26-2015 07:51 PM

We buy fresh raw honey from a bee keeper not far from here he charges 12$ for a quart jar full. I think thas a good price for fresh local honey. We sometimes trade him too. He will take fish or other canned goodies in trade.

Andy C 03-26-2015 08:31 PM

It's the best!! And if you have alleges, local hunny will help a ton!!

marty f 03-26-2015 09:51 PM

Funny this has come up, when I retire and move to AR I plan on becoming a bee keeper. Been researching it for a while now. Ill start off with 5 hives.

meat killer 86 03-26-2015 09:53 PM

If you have a farmers market it'll definitely be there

The Garden Show at the coliseum this weekend should have some too. Baby's Local Honey will be there, I think they have a store by the courthouse too.

simplepeddler 03-27-2015 09:34 AM

guy put a hive on my property last year..........he give me free honey...........but this year it will be from my own place.

Kind of neat, the grandbaby thinks the bees are cool!

you know whats great ??? When i move to Missouri in the next few months... i plan on doing beekeeping also---gonna start with 2 hives--- 80 +/- lbs of honey per hive @ $18/pound = $2880.... gonna be a good side job.

Jordan 03-27-2015 10:34 AM

I went home last night. Grilled some pork chops with green beans and cathead biscuits with honey. Take my word for it---- It was delicious.. No pics because dinner was gone before it hit the plate.

You can get it at that Charleston Farmers Market on Bilbo St. every Saturday morning. It seems like I've seen local honey at some of the feed stores too.

^^^^This... Don't buy a huge jar unless you plan on using ALOT of it. I put some in a smoothie 3-4 times a week and the big jars still crystalize.

DannyI 03-27-2015 11:49 PM

To get rid of crystals, just place the jar in warm water, I forget, maybe hot water. People I know who have a large honey hive business in LC said sometimes the same day as taking the honey off hives and jaring it, it will crystallize.

eman 03-28-2015 10:05 AM

A couple of my friends in Florida have at least 60 hives between the 2 of them. They rent them out to the orchards and farmers to pollinate crops. make money on the hives and the honey.

Put the jars in a pot of water and heat to 180 F and it will fix your crystallization problem.

saute86 03-28-2015 07:59 PM

My family has around 20 hives. We use to do around 50 to 60 hives. A few years back we had a problem with moth larvae. If you reuse supers make sure you freeze them for a couple of days to kill any larvae that might be in the frames from storage. We keep 12 hives in a satsuma orchard. It has to be the best honey I have ever eaten. Fletcher's Feed Store sells local honey. If you plan on getting into bee keeping there is a local club in SWLA that is good to join. They will go out of their way to help you in any way.

How much is initial start up? I have been interested in doing this for quite a while but have no idea how much it will cost, or where to even get a hive from
