Fishing superstitions
Just like a lot of baseball players, I believe we have superstitions. For example a player will do certain things prior to stepping up to the plate. Mine is a certain shirt for fishing. This year, I have tried to prove it wrong. But, I finally break it out and wear it for the first time this year and I have my best trip of the year. Needless to say, this only solidified my superstition and I won't be on the water without it. So, am I the only one like this? Figured this could be a fun thread.

I have some good luck clothes as well. Anyone heard of bad luck from bringing bananas in a boat? Not sure if it's just a bass fishing thing. Been wondering about this for a while and am curious to see what else comes up. Thanks for bringing it up marshrunner!

Not sure about the banana thing. I'm allergic to them lol. Should see some peculiar replies on this subject.

I asked a giude we used in Venice about this and learned that a lot of banana boats used to sink or be stranded in the Caribian so now captains in GOM consider them badluck.
The real reason so many of them sunk is because they were poorly constructed and maintained. I don't remember if it was captain hoop or captain Eddie that said this. |
I have been catching specks & red for 35 plus years with banans on board. must be just a myth.

I was always told that bananas on a boat are bad luck, because when the larger ships used to ship bananas they often came with a dangerous spider that was known to bite/kill people onboard. And yes I have a shirt that I think brings me good luck, and its an old long sleeve Hollister shirt. I have no idea why, but when I look back at pictures I always see this shirt with nice catches. Also, I always look at the cows, if they are feeding this brings my confidence WAY up! If they are laying down, this hurts. I've found it fairly true as well. |
Mine has always been to throw any and all change in my pocket overboard at the dock before leaving. Just more of a habit now, there's probably $50 in change around our pier by now.

I have found that if I leave my wife at home I catch more fish................ just saying ;)

yall must believe in horoscopes as well. fire gods?

I've found its good luck to follow somebody around that's catching fish. Just gotta stay just out of casting range. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Yep |
Very superstitious here. Never ever leave the dock without an ice chest full of beer.
|
No one opens a beer on my boat before the first fish is landed......unless we don't land a fish by 8:00 am.
|
No Fly rods. Every time somebody brings one the winds start blowing 100 mph

I think we should take up donations to fund a study with MathGeek as the lead. |
Never catch a fish on the first cast
|
I second that
|
Well for me it always seems like when my wife comes with me the weather is terrible. Its either extremely windy or it starts raining....or both!

Try to make spontaneous trips . . . planning = wind. Be warned, I might be fishing BL next Monday. |
I always thought I was the bad luck charm..... All I know is if I'm in a boat with you, you better bring an ice chest full of beer, 2 pockets full of change, and pass by every cow pasture on the way to the launch.

I went on a spear fishing trip with bananas on board. Captain wasn't too keen but to make the customer happy he let us bring them. We had gone with this guy probably 3 times before this and all were stellar trips with 0 hiccups. Everything went great every time. This time my cousins speargun broke, he lost his goggles, his regulator locked up 80 feet down( thank goodness for secondaries). If that wasn't bad enough the boat broke down. Soon as that motor quit I went for the ice chest and threw those bananas as far as I possibly could. Few minutes later the boat cranked up and not a single issue for the rest of the trip. Ever since then I have not allowed bananas on my boat. I did try it once after that trip on my own boat and didn't catch crap in stellar conditions and had a bunch of other things go wrong. It only took me one test trip to ward me off of them forever. I'm not superstitious at all but I certainly don't take the chance anymore

1st fish caught by me or anyone in the group gets thrown back, no matter what!
|
Haha, on a tuna trip with captain Eddie we had a rough day lost a few wahoo a few nice YF right by the boat, things just weren't going right.
Towards the end of the day after a lot of lost fish my buddy broke out his banana and captain Eddie looked at him like he was crazy! He grabbed the banana and threw it on a nearby boat who immediately scrubbed the banana off of their vessel. |
One of my buddies brought a banana on my boat once. Started off kind of slow...After I snatched it out of his hand and threw it overboard, the fishing turned on where we were and started smoking the trout on top. The look on his face when I grabbed and tossed it without saying a word was priceless

Don't do anything to _iss off the fishing Gods!

Exactly. If I catch a fish that size I'm useless for the rest of the day anyway. lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I always bring my fishing poles with me, and my boat keys.
I have gone fishing without them on separate trips and have had terrible luck catching. |

Been there, done that! Also went duck hunting one time and met up with a friend at his blind, but realized I forgot to put my gun in my truck. Worst duck hunt ever! LOL |

Take as many dumps as possible before launching the boat. Usually house, store, boat launch in that order..

Superstitions
Agree with no bananas on the boat. Other than that the only other rule is if you catch a fish with a brand new bait on the first cast you might as well throw that lure away, you'll never catch another on that bait.
|
Here's one for U all. I keep my Man junk pointed downward and to the left...
I catch fish...:grinpimp: |
Always fish with a hangover.
