Topwater lure and color preference.

What topwaters lures do you prefer and what colors do you guys use this time of year?

I use a chrome with pink or yellow back she dog. I don't think the back color matters too much but it bright enough to see where the lures at almost immediately.

This year I wanting to expand my topwaters skills and would appreciate any tips and tricks.

The water clarity determines what color I use. If the water is dingy, I use a brighter color. Just my thinking.

Water Color, Sunlight, and the surface conditions (choppy, ripple, slick, etc) are the factors i consider when choosing a plug.
I typically throw heddon spook jrs. but when there is a good chop i'll throw a SheDog because it is a much louder lure.
As far as color goes. I dont pay much mind to it. I think all colors are good in cleaner water, but for stained water I will throw a darker colored plug.

This year, clown colored spook jr and pink/chrome or pink/gold one knocker spooks have done the damage for me in the dirty waters of big lake. Last fall I was catching on bone and bone/chrome spook jr and one knocker.

This color chart has been posted before, and has helped me understand the issue better.
Not sure if it applies as much to top water, but here it is

RichWentFishing504 05-04-2015 07:01 PM

Hmmm. I guess I'll stop by academy and pick up some lures that aren't as loud as my she dogs to try this weekend if the winds are calmer.

I like skitterwalks and spooks

I mostly fish one topwater till it starts sinking then I change it

No color special ...

I change size of topwater on times of the year are area but color has never really matted because 90% all topwater are chrome or white on bottom

Clampy 05-04-2015 07:58 PM

I like some chrome when it's sunny and bone when it's cloudy.
So I fish a clown 80% and the rest is black chrome.
But of course I have every color shape and size topwater and never use them.
I have issues.

I thought we were gonna start a support group.

I need to.
I've gotten better since I have admitted my problem.
Now I do a lot of taking things off the shelves and putting them back after a few murmured cuss words.
The new mirodine line coming out as got me worried about a relapse.

Montauk17 05-05-2015 08:57 AM

My favorite is a black/char she dog....bone/chrome is a close second.

bobo23 05-05-2015 09:26 AM

I like skitterwalks. The new spec. color is kind of cool. I do find that sometimes pink is better than anything else. I've also found that they will hit a chrome in clear water when they won't touch a bone or pink. I just keep changing colors till they bust one and that's my biatch for the day.

Garfish 05-05-2015 09:52 AM

Chrome/Chartreuse
Chrome/Pink
Clown

Chrome/black skitter foe lyfe. Buutttt....i threw something new this past weekend. Kinda felt like i was cheating on my ole lady tho. I'll chunk it a few more times before i start talking to my lawyer about a possible break up with rapala

RichWentFishing504 05-06-2015 08:52 AM

Alright. I took inventory of what's in the tackle boxes. I got 3 Chrome/Yellow Back She dog's, Two Chrome/ Blue Back She Dogs, One spook jr in clown, and a couple of Strike King Sexy Dawg's and Sexy Dawg Jr's in Bone.

This year I'm keeping a rod in the boat dedicated to topwater.

This weekend looks like it'll be windy but I'm hoping things will work out. I'll launch out of Delacroix or Hopedale Saturday and Sunday this weekend.
