Lacassine Bayou

Anybody ever fish Lacassine Bayou? If so, how is it?

and what would be the ideas of "stocking" the bayou like the recently did else where, cant remember exactly where they did it, but i remember seeing that they released like 100k bass in a river system somewhere to try and bring them back...

what would be your thoughts on something such as this on the bayou?

i am not real familiar with the bayou, but as far as i know barely any bass are caught there. unless there is a secret that i am not aware of....

noodle creek 05-06-2015 11:22 AM

Why you wanna fish in chocolate milk?

sledgehammer 05-06-2015 11:22 AM

There is a secret that you were not aware of and the river they just stock was the Mermentau and I know some guys that drop some around Streeters so there is bass that they stock in that bayou When the water is right you can catch them in there pretty decent

why would the bayou always be chocolate milk when the bell city ditch is not always dirty?

cgoods17 05-06-2015 02:59 PM

and to my second question, what do yall think about trying to stock the bayou, as they did in the Mermentau?

Duffy.yyz 05-06-2015 03:10 PM

I have seen people have great trips out there. Bass and sacalait...Mostly south of the Lorraine Bridge. And I know it gets decent around Streeters Canal when the water clears up. There are also two long canals that run from the east side of the Lacassine Pool that clear up too, and I have heard of decent reports there as well. Stocking wouldn't be a bad idea...even if it doesn't help, I don't see it causing any issues.

BassYakR 05-06-2015 03:13 PM

Yeah stocking it def couldnt hurt anything... WLF will likely provide the fry to stock it with... Get a few ppl together to go spread em out.

meat killer 86 05-06-2015 03:48 PM

Chris, catfishing is good. I have also fished the white perch during the spawn and caught a few on the cypress trees. And also bassyakr said they recently put 100000 or 500000 fry on the west fork.
They also just did the mermentau. I'm sure there is bass. I have seen the water clear clear out there. Call me when you wanna go I'll fish it with you.

just think it would be cool to be able to have another place to be able to catch some nice bass since the bayou is such a neat place

They are there to be caught!

mallardhead 05-06-2015 04:23 PM

The fish are in lacassine bayou have caught many out of there. Water will clear up give it another month

kibb 05-06-2015 05:17 PM

^^^what he said. I do water quality monitoring on the Lacassine watershed and so far have noticed higher turbidity levels from around mid-February to mid-May. During the rest of the year the numbers are actually pretty low. There are fluctuations here and there due to rainfall. I'm basing this on information gathered at my most southern site on the new Hwy 14 bridge crossing the bayou.

No need to stock the bayou seen many of bass pour out the pool when water gets high enough to pour over north and east rollers.

BCDD is surrounded by marsh and Lacassine Bayou is surrounded by agriculture.

saute86 05-06-2015 08:15 PM

They are fish there. The locals are just tight lipped.

When I was a child back in the 60's and into my teens in the 70's I saw plenty of sac-a-lait pulled out of Lacassine Bayou by Murphy Cormier, "Blanco" Bourgeois, Clyde DeRouen, and probably the best of them all..."Cobby" Landry. Cobby, Blanco and Murphy all had camps south of Lorraine Bridge and fished the bayou several days a week. Clyde fished with them but was also a great bass fisherman, taking several over 5 lbs. and one over 6 on a fly rod. They knew how to fish it in just about any conditions. I think that is the trick. Get out there and learn it. I have fished it over the years and have done pretty good on sac-a-lait but never like these guys did.

so the "BCDD" doesnt get its water from the ag fields around it? i would bet at least 90% of the water in that ditch is from the surrounding ag fields. the entire Illinois plant is drained into the BCDD. and i am willing to bet all of Sweetlake property to the west is just the same... Hints the name Drainage Ditch

cgoods17 05-07-2015 08:32 AM

Also, what about way up north on the bayou where you would come up to Bayou Chene?

any reports from that far north?

DaPointIsDaBomb 05-07-2015 09:10 AM

stocking is silly. All Florida bass anyways and we have plenty of native bass. All this stocking Florida bass nonsense is just pressure from sparkle boat owning bass fishermen who get mad when you keep a bass

I have fish up north towards bayou chene never had any luck always caught good south of teppes bridge. If you have time one weekend we can make a trip. Defiantly have some fish in there. You ever fished the wiggles and misere south of intercoastal? Very good bass fishing there also with a few reds to boot.

Duffy.yyz 05-07-2015 03:42 PM

There are fish all over, just harder to catch them in some locations..

Sweetlake
Bayou Hypolite
Black Bayou
Misere
Willow Lake
There are plenty of places

The northern part of BCDD is always muddy from ag run off but as you get south the ag fields drain into the marsh then pumped into the canals. They pump clear water. That is one of Sweet Lake's pumps. Their west fields have to be pumped off.

It was clear 2 days ago but muddied up again. Once it drops a foot it will pull the black water out the swamp and you will have some nice water between Teppy's and Loraine.

cgoods17 05-08-2015 02:22 PM

10-4, may give it a try one day.. or at least drink beer and catch a tan out there

funkyflemmons 05-19-2015 03:08 PM

I live 10 minutes from launch. I've caught them on jugs before. One pushing 4 and know of many other fish being caught out there. Just not a place many people go when they wanna bass. Fish

justjared 05-21-2015 04:39 PM

Crossing my mind to launch at Lorraine this weekend probably a dumb move though lol

BassYakR 05-21-2015 05:03 PM

Do it Jared! Cant be much worse than the river right now.... id launch at hwy 14 and go south tho.

Also Streeters is due east of 1 mile and just south is east roller ditch. I have also caught bass in the Illinois canal and around Cane Island.

saute86 05-21-2015 08:18 PM

Almost forgot the Pipeline Ditch has been known to produce a bass or 2.

Reggoh 05-22-2015 09:33 AM

Is there a public launch at the Hwy 14 bridge?
What are the other public launches that give you access to the south end of Lacassine Bayou?

Where do most people launch from to fish that south area of the bayou?

I have fished in the pools a little for the past 4-5 years since I moved to Lacassine but have never been on the bayou or to Streeters

Garys land will give fastest route by water.

saute86 05-22-2015 09:58 PM

I launch at HWY 14 when I fish south. Launch isn't bad at all. They graded it a few weeks ago and it isn't as rough of a drive in.

Had the pleasure of meeting Blanco at Murphy's old camp....Funny character with lots of wisdom on Laccassine.
