Any fans of Lew's reels?
I recently acquired three and spent my first couple of days on the water with them. Each was enjoyable. A BB1Z, a Tournament Pro, and a Tournament Laser Speed Spool.
The Tournament Pro is a really fantastic little machine. The BB1Z is a no BS classic. The Abu Garcia Revo SX I got is also working out, but doesn't feel as nice. Something about it. The two old Curados I have are stellar, of course, and in a different way. Great quality. Wondering if there's any other Lew's fans out there. |
I had three of the tourney MGs at one point. All were great reels. Honestly don't know why I didn't buy more at the time but in about to get myself a couple more.

Made the switch from curado to lews some 4 years ago and haven't regretted it one bit. An mg, couple in shores and 4 TP's which are my favorites. I fish nearly every weekend and throw top water a lot and have only changed 1 pawl.

I got 2 BB1 inshores.... Them things are sweet...

There is something about the Tournament Pro....
It seems "right". Not that the others don't. I have it on my fluke rod and it just hums it. Fits nicely in the hand. Visually appealing. It's also kinda strange, with the pop-out hook holder and line gauge/type dial. Just a neat reel. |
Is there anywhere that keeps a good selection in stock?

I'm aware of the Internet. I just like to touch it before I spend that kinda money on it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Cajun Tackle in Lake Charles has them. It's a good store.

I have a speed spool on a 7' duckett, I love it for pitching soft plastics.

The lews are great. I've always been pretty good at casting, but over the past few years I've switched to only lews on abu veritas / vendetta (cheap but good for the most part) rods, and it really improved my casting. I guess having the same feel in every rod/reel and not taking a few casts to get adjusted after picking a different rod up helps. I'm pretty hard on my stuff though, and have bent the handle (aluminum?) on one of the lower end bait cast models, still functions fine but not as comfortable with the one bent reel handle. Probably could bend it back but haven't tried yet. I'm not a fan of the spinning reels though. Although I think the two I have are both 5:2:1, and they're just not fast enough. They do make higher speed models though. I have lost too many fish that run straight to me that I just couldn't keep up with them. And I'd try a higher speed lews spinning reel, but I really don't like the flat knob they have. I've switched to only okuma trios high speed spinning reels, because of the 6:2:1 / round knob/ and price (the baitcaster okumas are POOP though, trust me). I like to back all my bait casters with braid then tie to my main line, and I've noticed the spools are kind of small on the bait casters. I feel like I've lost quite a few top water fish bc of this also. When making a long cast your spool gets smaller, so the line take up per reel wind gets smaller when you have a lot of line out, and using mono for topwater I have the stretch factor too. I feel like I cant keep enough pressure on the fish way out there when my reel is slow. Overall good reels for the price though.

I am a die hard LEW's fan and will always have some in the boat. But.... I picked up a 13 fishing Concept A (low profile) reel in 8.1:1 the other day and while the braking system is a little weird that thing fits my hand wonderfully and those big cork handles are sooo comfortable ! I went and bought another one. They also have more available drag if you need it. For $175 (compared to $199) it's just as good and you save enough money to buy some more line or a couple of packs of bait. I may get 1 more once I sell something else. Still love the Tourney Pro's though.
|
I may still be adjusting to Lew's, but does the drag seem to slip maybe just a little too easily when setting the hook on a fish?
I set the drag to a tension that felt right, but maybe Lew's reels need just one more positive drag click when you're adjusting them?? I could also just be crazy. |

I use mono. But I just tightened the drag another little bit and all was well. It still seemed a little tight compared to how I set it on my Curados and Garcia Revo SX.
It's all good, though. Ain't complaining. |

Oh I wanted one ! But I didn't have the cash so a Ducket micro magic it was. They're still 40% off on the website. It's sooo hard not to pull out the credit card !! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Two out of three are on sale, I had to have the saltwater addition.

I love mine and planning to get a second one soon.
Also, customer service is second to none. After 3 years of service I sent it in and they did a full service for no charge at all. Even changed a bent part that the ice chest slid into while in the bed of my truck. |
Academy has the Tournament Laser Speed Spool model for $89 right now. It's 7.1:1 ratio.
Got one for Christmas for $79. I have it on my spinnerbait/ buzzbait rod. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...8cdc15c5b6.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...71e3d7482e.jpg |
Saw a guy in Cajun Tackle yesterday buying a Lew's American Hero reel. Didn't figure it was my place to tell him to check out the Tournament Pro before he paid, but I wanted to. I have mine on my fluke Rod; casts like a damn rocket.
|
T-Boo, don't knock that American hero, that thing can launch it!!

I hear ya. But I couldn't help but think of how happy that guy would've been with a Tournament Pro! :)
|
I switched to TP and bb1 prof from shimanos. They have been nothing short of amazing.
|
I use them mostly saltwater and they have held up great. Not one problem. I have 4 TP and 2 bb1 prof
|
Lew's Tournament Lazer is on sale again at Academy for $79.99.
It's a 7.1:1 ratio. |
Just bought a tournament pro G spool. 8.3:1. Ready to try it out.
|
Heck yeah. I don't have experience with a reel that fast, but I'm curious. If it's a Tournament Pro, it's gotta be good.

I don't know much about em. I traded a friend an old Shimano Core for supposedly the most expensive Lew's they make. I never used it one time. Let me get the model. I would be willing to cut someone a good deal on it.

fan of Lews reels
just picked up a Mach 1 Lews and it is smooth and cast better than my Revo s. Nederland Farm and Ranch had them on sale for $99 last week. Maybe I will get to check the drag on some lake sabine reds soon. On Wednesday there is 15% off on most any tackle for seniors 55 plus.
