04-up F-150 SPARK PLUG PROB

Anyone looking on here or a member here ever had their spark plugs changed on a an F-150????

Well hope you don't have two...the plugs break when they are extracting them with a "special tool" that Ford has distributed out. If they break get ready for labor costs to sky rocket.

A guy that works with me is having his replaced. 6 of the 8 plugs broke off. secondly some of the carbon and plug that broke fell into the head.

NOW the whole engine has to be removed to extract the crap!!!! He is sick right now.

longsidelandry 01-06-2010 03:49 PM

I would be fighting that! They should have to fix something that THEY break!!!!

adamsfence 01-06-2010 03:50 PM

one of my employees just went through this....he ended up changing the motor after fighting it for about six months. He was doing it him self. He said it was cheaper to get a motor out of a junk yard than pay them to fix it.

SULPHITE 01-06-2010 03:51 PM

Mechanic told him that it will happen...nothing they can do about it...Ford awesome engineering

longsidelandry 01-06-2010 03:54 PM

That's just rediculous!

LaAngler 01-06-2010 03:56 PM

yep it's a engineering design flaw, the coil over plugs suck, the original problem was not enough threads tapped into aluminum housing. the issue was fixed I think in 05 or maybe 06.

there are several issues that ford could have done to improve the 5.4 that wasn't done. I had a 2001 5.4 16 valve that i changed the plugs, it was a MFer, but none broke. I soaked them with WD-40 and they came right out.

do a google search on it, tons of info

Bad thing is that I dont know if my engine is one of the bad ones, or if the warranty covers this issue. Ford should warranty the work when this happens.

gov motors vortec is better than ford triton, i like the rest of the fords better tho...

SULPHITE 01-06-2010 03:56 PM

Yep...its happening to alot of people. He has a 2007 ford f-150 5.4L too...

Montauk17 01-06-2010 03:57 PM

Been a known problem for several years,I broke one off on a ford v10 without putting much force on it at all. This is why I drive a chevy....

kenner18v 01-06-2010 03:59 PM

Go to f150online.com and they have tons of info and ford's fix to mechanic's changing plugs.

kenner18v 01-06-2010 05:16 PM

Here you go, this is a tsb directed at all ford dealership mechanic's on changing plugs and taken broken ones out. Now, as you can guess some dealer's might not even know about this so I would print this and bring to service advisor!!! LOL

a neighbors 02 f250 blows a sparkplug out about once a month.......

Cajun Outdoors 01-06-2010 09:41 PM

Had this happen to me in September!!!!!

The Ford garage should know about this and they have special procedures. I brought mine to a shop in Lafayette to get my oil and lube done before I went on a dove hunting trip in September. He calls me back and said my plugs would need changing in 5k miles so I said go ahead. He calls back and says he will need $2k to remove the engine because he broke one off.

I told him to stop, I had it towed to where I bought it(Arceneaux Ford) and they changed all the plugs and removed the piece for about $500.

It's a common problem, so I think it's a mechanics fault if he doesn't know common problems with the vehicle he's working on. I refused to pay for them to break my spark plugs. But Ford really should have issued a recall on this...Really bad business...

I absolutely agree with this. My problem with buying GM now is that they took a .gov handout. I will not buy foreign, and until dodge actually builds a real truck around the cummins i won't buy it either.

PUREBAY2200 01-07-2010 03:27 AM

I was told by my service shop that the spark plugs break off an 90% of ford f -150z
horrible design and nothing that ford will do to warranty it....
sucks to have this issue... I had $2200 of service work done on mine a few months bk. I rolled over 100 k miles and the bill stacked up. Thankfullly I didn't need the spark plugs changed!!!!!

Then it sounds like you are in the brand of vehicle you have chosen to drive.

You'll never buy a Dodge then, I heard that Ford will be putting the Cummins engine in their trucks within the next few years. Ford owns Cummins...

they been saying that for a few years haven't heard anything in awhile i guess they renewed the contract

longsidelandry 01-07-2010 10:00 AM

O maybe so, I heard that sometime last year I think. I wanna say that it was said to have been in like 2012 or something around there.

Ray 01-07-2010 01:03 PM

Ford owns 25% of Cummins.
But Ford is building their own diesel for 2011.
It is called the Scorpion.
I saw the specs on it a few months ago.
Turbo is on the top of the engine, intakes are where the exhaust ports are now.
Exhaust ports are on top of the heads.
It uses urea(chickensh!!t) injected into the fuel burn chambers to make it burn
cleaner.
I heard that GM is going to have to use urea also.
The Cummins is clean burning enough to not have to use urea.

I had a spark plug blow out of my 2002 F150 on top the I-210 bridge. If your friend is in the Sulphur area also and is looking for a place to get it fixed, I had mine repaired at Carrol's. I'm on my third F150, still have two, and loved them all with the exception of this very expensive design issue that I also was not aware of until this past spring. The duration it took Ford to correct the thread issue is one thing, but can you believe a design on a pick-up that requires the engine to be removed to get the head off? Another word of warning: Don't wash your engine if you have an F150 with the coil-on-plug design. Water will get in the tubes that go to the spark plugs, boil up into the coil boots, and then run like hell until you pull them all off and dry or replace them.
