Tohatsu 40 4 stroke trim switch

Just picked up a 2016 model. Haven't ran it yet but the one thing I can see I don't care for is the trim switch location. Why in the world did they put it behind the throttle instead of on the end like the mercury big tiller? Is there any sort of conversion for this?

Because the switch in the end of the tiller is patented, that's why.

BGcoreg 02-12-2017 09:23 AM

What size boat you putting it in?

I thought Etec is on the end also, where is the yamaha big tillers?

homerun 02-12-2017 10:19 PM

On the 40 tdli you can easily connect a remote switch wire from under the cowling on port side (butt connector already there) and run it to locate by your leg so as your driving and toggle up and down with right hand

At the end of the tiller by where your left thumb rests.

marshrunner757 02-13-2017 07:18 PM

Guess it's not a patent issue then. Think I'm going to wire a remote switch like I had on my mercury.

I like that. Any details?

I asked our Tohatsu rep about that trim switch in the tiller, he said he "thought" is was a patent issue, maybe he guessed wrong, and I evidently repeated it wrong, sorry?

Lol. No apology. I just need to get that crazy thing relocated.

Mission accomplished today. Trim now on the side of boat where I hold on. Trim on tiller still works as well.

Well, pic is rotated but you get the idea. Ran my wire and spliced inside the tiller.

i talked to the sales rep at lake area marince in lake charles, (owners son), and he said modifying the handle could result in void of warranty... but i figure if it messes up something bad, ill just order an oem tohatsu handle and replace it before bringing it in

Just order the trim switch. All I did was splice into the wire.

Haven't been able to run it much but I like it. I lost a little speed but really like the quiet operation. Best I've got was 41 on GPS but that was a max and not maintained. However, the prop I'm trying now, Yamaha black stainless 17 pitch with a little cup, handles better and comes out the hole pretty good. I ran 38 with it. Will have a tach this weekend and will also load for fishing. So we will see.

Fish with it for 6 months and you'll never even look at a 2 stroke again. I switched about 12 years ago, you couldn't give me a dozen 2 strokes for my 4 stroke. Makes life much too easy, turn the key and go, no choke, no revving up when cold to keep it running, no smoke, much less noise, burns 2/3 the gas, what's not to love?

Lol. I've run the boat 3 time just trying to get it set up and I'm already to that point. This thing is so quiet you can hear it piss when you're idling. [emoji106]

It's almost idiotproof. If it overheats, it shuts itself down. And it does not care if you're in the middle of a mud flat, it shuts down.

I'm hooking a trail tach up tomorrow. Interested to see what it's turning.

38mph with a fish load is good, I would be interested in trying a 15 or 16p black stainless and get you at 6000rpm.

This was not a fishing load. This is me, about 4 gallons of fuel, 2 batterys and troll motor. The prop is a 17 pitch black stainless with cup. I am running it pretty high in the water also. I want to put my 16 black stainless on, lower the motor and see what it does. I ran it once and got 36-37 but didn't have a tach at that time. I think I was running it too high in the water also.

My 40hp Yamaha motor is headed for a rebuild and upgrade carbs, head and exhaust tomorrow. I may try to rent or buy that 16P black stainless from you. I have a 14 P black stainless now that I am already at redline with it.

Rjrobin2002 02-27-2017 02:58 PM

I like to hit rev limiter solo

CorkieB 03-02-2017 07:26 PM

I hated the trim location on mine also. I did about the same thing but my switch is on the bench under my legs along with my jackplate switch.

What size boat you running? What kind of performance numbers are you seeing?

Im running a 1748 alweld marsh special. Motor is a 40hp with the restrictor plate off sitting on a Micro jacker stacked on a manual plate (9.5 inches of set back all together I think). Prop is a 15p black stainless. Im topping out at 36-37. Tried a power tech SRD 15p but for whatever reason it pulled stupid hard no mater how high the motor was or how I trimmed it. So I put the black stainless back on. Guys seem to get better results from the SRD on the 15-16ft edge or ambush boats. All in all I am very pleased with my set up. Good hole shot plenty fast for me and that 17ft boat has plenty room.

CorkieB 03-03-2017 12:53 AM

If I remember correctly Im turning about 5800 at WOT.

marshrunner757 03-03-2017 07:35 AM

Looks like you're running pretty good. Would like to try an Srd on my boat. Heard a lot of good things about them.
