Pink plugs trolling for wahoo or tuna, diamond jigs at the rigs foe tuna

cmdrost 01-19-2010 09:26 AM

live bait or big poppers for tuna

mauraders or makira lures for wahoo.

QUACKHEAD 01-19-2010 01:27 PM

Hey Dink, a couple of months ago you posted a couple of pics with some tuna, did you go out of Venice for those??

Dink 01-19-2010 01:41 PM

Grand isle actually............

jpeff31787 01-19-2010 01:50 PM

sand eel...

QUACKHEAD 01-19-2010 01:52 PM

I just got a boat for offshore fishing and thought about going to Grand Isle this year and hope to go after tuna. I would really love to go after dolphin but don't know if I will ever go out the far. I really don't want to drag my trailer to Venice. I won't ask where your fishing grounds are but how far out frome Grand Isla are you running.

Dink 01-19-2010 02:03 PM

it wasnt this year, but, theres usually a rip pretty close in.........30-40 miles. find a grass bed and troll it, youll find dolphin...........

QUACKHEAD 01-19-2010 02:10 PM

Thanks for the info. Big Kahunaz, I didn't mean to steal your thread, but I did want to borrow it.

cmdrost 01-19-2010 02:35 PM

dolphin are closer in than tuna usually. Find a rip and you'll find dolphin.

QUACKHEAD 01-19-2010 03:06 PM

I'm ready for the summer, Duck hunting Sux this year anyway, so bring on the heat! Summer is the best time of year for tuna and dolphin right ?

cmdrost 01-19-2010 04:04 PM

actually spring is best for wahoo and tuna. Summer is best for Dorado, but tuna & wahoo are still plentiful. Everything slows down around Sept.

QUACKHEAD 01-19-2010 04:29 PM

THANKS FOR THE INFO cmdrost. Looking forward to spring and summer. So you think April and May time frame.

Dink 01-19-2010 04:40 PM

Im thinking end of Feb.........planning a trip to lump then, depending on reports of course............

QUACKHEAD 01-19-2010 05:02 PM

Let me know when you have a date set. February sounds good. I can go pretty much whenever your ready, weekend or weekday.

PUREBAY2200 01-19-2010 09:49 PM

Wahoo magic!!!! Use the Stretch 30 . Blue or pink.
Troll in a cirlce Round the the rigs.
Set em back and hold on!!!!

Dink 01-19-2010 10:33 PM

Yeah you right, but like drost said.........marauders are the shizzz

Big Kahunaz 01-21-2010 01:44 PM

Good trolling speeds for wahoo/Tuna?

Jordan 01-21-2010 02:07 PM

48 knots :thefinger:

SULPHITE 01-21-2010 02:12 PM

Now Jordan...how is that information helpful?

cmdrost 01-21-2010 02:56 PM

wahoo like it fast. 8-9 knots or so. Bills, dolphin, & wahoo will all hit at this speed.

Dink 01-22-2010 01:36 AM

OK.......what is the equation to convert knots to MPH? I troll at bout 4.5 MPH and have hooked up both tuna and wahoo.....I may have just been lucky???

Ray 01-22-2010 01:39 AM

Knots X 1.15 = MPH

Dink 01-22-2010 01:41 AM

Drost......what knot do you use to tie on the hook to flouro??? I've lost some fish to wrong knots.......I've seen one that you tie it around the shank of the hook instead of to the eye, it wont slip b/c of the eye at the end of the hook shaft, but don't know what its called..........I tried steal leader twisted and crimped, but bite slows.......I think fish can see it.......Tim

Big Kahunaz 01-22-2010 03:10 AM

Thx for the info....moving to Hawaii Feb. 7th and just trying to get some ideas. All info greatly appreciated.

"Drost......what knot do you use to tie on the hook to flouro???"

We use the double uni alot. The joke on the boat is "it catches blue marlin & speckled trout!"

Other than that we use the "crimp" method for the big pulling baits and leave enough room for them to slide up & down the leader.

Big Kahunaz 01-22-2010 12:57 PM

Now that's what im talking about! Nice pic! The fishing there is year round....and Grander BLUE Marlin are caught w/in 1 mile of Kailua-Kona...along w/ wahoo, yellowfin, skip jack, mahi, broadbill swords, spear fish, white marlin, etc. Man i can't wait. I've got a lot to learn but I'll have time. If any of you have any books for recommendation or sites that gear towards sport fishing & big game trolling please let me know.

We'll be there for 6 month guaranteed...but we're hoping for 18 months.
Fishing is great there...especially for Blues and Ahi. Mahi run in abundance and wahoo (ono) are occasional but not rare along with the other pelagic species mentioned in the above post. They also have peacock bass...Lake Wilson in the higher altitudes of Oahu..which will go on my wall when i catch one along with other freshwater species. Trevalle are commonly saught after from the rocks shore fishing. It's never a boring day there and hunting in the mountains can also produce turkey, mountain goats, pheasants, quail, churaks???....wild boar....several different deer etc. Lots of wildlife options from the isalnds.

I wouldn't compare it to Venice, La though. (as far as fishing) Although chances of catching a lifetime Grander Marlin is 100x better in HI.

I will be posting tons of pics and you tube vids on here during my stay.

Big Kahunaz 01-25-2010 01:05 AM

OK..... besides what's said.....not more advice???? Hell that's odd...where are ya baystealth?

cmdrost 01-25-2010 11:02 AM

Haoles! I don't think it will be a problem. We'll keep our nose clean and smile. I've done a lot of research on this issue.
