Everyone ready for the new boating regulation?

No person born after January 1, 1984, shall operate a motorboat powered by a motor in excess of ten horsepower unless he has successfully completed a boating safety class approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA). A person who has completed an approved boating safety class shall be in possession of evidence of such completion when operating such a boat.
This law is effective July 1, 2010

longsidelandry 01-26-2010 01:43 PM

Yea I gotta take a damn test so I can continue to drive my 2 boats! :pissed:

Ray 01-26-2010 02:34 PM

Rule came out on Jan. 1st.
Just wanted everyone to know so they won't get busted.
If you live around Lake Charles, you can go thru a study course and exam at the Lake Charles Power Squadron. They have 4 or 5 classes a year. Register or get info. at Ship to Shore on Lake St.
If we want one for the Salty Cajun crew to all do it at the same time, we just need a date and how many will be attending and they will hook us up. They just ask for a $5/person donation to pay for pizza and drinks. Or they have a bbq pit, we can bring our own food to cook.

Jordan 01-26-2010 02:46 PM

ray, is this normally on a weekend ?

Ray 01-26-2010 02:52 PM

Yes, Saturdays, around 8:30 to 3:00.
Study material is shown all day and the test is taken at the end.
They pretty much show you everything that will be on the test before you take it.
They have guys there to help you with any questions you may not understand.
If'n I am off work and we do this, I will do the BBQ'ing.

Ray 01-26-2010 02:54 PM

I think the next one is March 27th, right by the 210 bridge, next to the launch.

Jordan 01-26-2010 02:57 PM

Ray, let me know something about this. Im interested.... i"ll make the trip iffin im not working.

Ray 01-26-2010 03:01 PM

If you want to go March 27th, be there at 8:30 am. You can call Ship to Shore, they
have the dates and times or email
Lt/C Mark D. Severns, P
c/o Ship to Shore Co.

4313 Lake Street
Lake Charles, LA 70605
(337) 474-0730

mseverns@yahoo.com

I can let Mark know you are going if you want me to contact him.
If we can get 10 or more people from Salty Cajun, we can have a class just for us. We just need a date, they
have the place.

BossHog 01-26-2010 03:11 PM

Im still trying to figure out if I need to take this course. I missed the deadline by a month but have had a USCG captains license since I was 18. Anybody know the rules on that?

Ray 01-26-2010 03:13 PM

Email Mark Severns at the email I gave Jordan above. He can let you know if you need it or not. If you want me to find out for you, I can. Me and him are friends.

Ray 01-26-2010 03:32 PM

They have to take this same course.
So does the Sheriff's Dept. boat drivers.

Ray 01-26-2010 03:41 PM

Everyone show up March 27th, with a Salty Cajun t-shirt.
Make it an SC event. We can all get points for that from Shadman.

Jordan 01-26-2010 03:51 PM

when is the next one after 3-27-10 ??

Ray 01-26-2010 03:57 PM

They have not made any more new dates yet. They are waiting for input from the public.
That is why I brought up the Salty Cajun thing. If we have a bunch before
July 1st that are interested, they will set up another date. It is usually every three
months or so, unless they get more people interested.
Last year Don Shetler Ford did a class for their employees. I am surprised there are
not more people interested now that the laws have changed.

Jordan 01-26-2010 04:11 PM

Im interestred, just cant take off on march 27th.... its a mandatory thing we have to be at

We are getting with Remy Broussard to make sure. They also asked a lawyer who is in the Power Squadron to give his opinion. But the LDWF opinion will trump any one elses opinion.

You can take it online, for a $15 fee. If you fail it, you will have to pay another $15 to take it again.

Yes your 13 yr odl can take it. I took mine at 12 or 11 i dont rember. But i also run a boat everyday alone...
Thats the only reason i took it, in order to drive a boat alone over 10 h.p you need to be 13 yrs+ and boaters safety card

I have an idea - I think all the old timers ought to suggest March 13. :grinpimp:

Let's start an Old Farts Fund and get together and hire someone to cook for the young 'uns, maybe bring in some local DJ to "spin records" for the boys and girls and keep 'em busy and distracted from sunup to sundown.

Have it at Hebert's - that way they can watch us running to our favorite holes while they're in class!

Just a thought....

Ray 01-27-2010 09:37 AM

Some need to get it before July 1st, or some people won't be able to run their
own boats. That would suck to have a boat that you cannot run.

Loneshark 01-27-2010 11:18 AM

LDWF needs to update their website.

Vessel Operator Age Information:
Persons born after January 1, 1988, may not operate a motorboat powered by a motor in excess of 10 housepower unless he or she has successfully completed a boating safety course approved by NASBLA. These persons must be in possession of evidence of completion of the approved course whenever operating such a vessel.
It is illegal for anyone under the age of 16 years of age to operate a personal watercraft (PWC).

Ray 01-27-2010 11:42 AM

New law says 1984. It has been published in all the newspapers.

longsidelandry 01-27-2010 11:49 AM

I thought they had a notation online that the new law will go into effect on 1/1/10

Loneshark 01-27-2010 11:52 AM

I was just saying LDWF needs to update their website (www.wlf.louisiana.gov/boating/regulations). I was able to find the updated regulation but only because I was looking for it. If someone would happen to just click on "Regulations" they would get wrong info and good luck trying to explain that to a warden.

But thanks for the heads up. I emailed a few friends that need to take the course and they had no idea of the new regulation. Must people in that age group don't read the paper.

Thanks again!

(I smell some good bait here.....)

Can't say I blame 'em (e.g., Houston Comical) or might be some other reason????

Ray 01-27-2010 02:21 PM

Try this one:

longsidelandry 01-28-2010 12:46 PM

Just took mine, got 93% 70 out of 75 correct!!! So glad to be done with that crap. It took me about 30 min online, alot better than sitting in a class all day.
