Stern light on Cowling?

My stern navigational light is always getting in the way because of its length. Has anyone ever put a short stern navigational light on the top of the cowling? Where can I find one of these lights?

I moved mine to top of center console.....I get the extra long one so it doesn't interfere with my sift at night.......its about 3 ft over my head and its angled toward the back of boat so it doesn't blind me.....that make sence?

I like the Perko 0945-0965 flush mount. Less obtrusive. Deadly D brings up a good point. If you don't have a mast head light ( most bay boats don't), you can use an all around stern light but it must be one meter( 3.3 ft) above the side lights. Check this out: http://boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/sidelights.htm It sounds like boats like the Pathfinders with the flush mounted sidelights below the rub rail may not be legal. The Pathfinders sure look good to me.

thats why hes the captain guys!!!! thanks ,this i didnt know!! thanks agai n to all input on this.i learned sumthin new:)

They make the removable with a short shaft, if you can find a place on the cowling to mount it. Us short shaft running and use a long shaft if anchored.

Ray 01-30-2010 03:22 PM

Mine is removable, plugs into the center console. It does have to be seen from all around.

BayBolt23 01-31-2010 06:22 PM

This is a dumb question but how do you get power to the light on top of your motor?

jchief 01-31-2010 06:34 PM

Run it from the battery or tie into a hot line under the cowling usually. Have to run a wire out of the cowling to the switch for sure.

Ray 02-01-2010 08:25 AM

I had one on my old 25 h and my old 40 hp. Jerry's marine did it. I didn't have a battery, just the motor. They had it hooked up to where the lights ran all the time.

The guys around the lake with the lights on the top of their motor is wired all the way to their switchs or do they run all the time like yours did Ray. Just curious Im interested in doing the same thing to mine. Thanks.

Ray 02-21-2010 03:01 AM

I didn't have a battery or switch. Just a motor and gas tank.
I ran the same private marsh hunting for 20 years, then got checked at the boat house.
I didn't have any lights on the boat at all.
That is when I got the lights ran from the motor.

Dink 02-21-2010 03:03 AM

I still like my end game the most.........ill show ya how, just send a pm

Does that mean that if it was dark.......you kept the motor running to keep the light on?

Ray 02-21-2010 03:11 AM

I ran to the blind and shut it down.
I ran it next to the Sabine Refuge in Hackberry for alligator hunting with no issues either.
I didn't anchor out anywhere. Most of the time when I stopped, the motor was my anchor. Shaller water boat.

BayBolt23 02-21-2010 04:51 AM

Yeah Im just interested in the light beeing on while Im running mainly, so if I tie into a hot wire it will work? Im no electrician either just wondering.

Ray 02-21-2010 05:25 AM

YOu need a fuse for protection and a switch to turn it on and off or it might run the batry down.

BayBolt23 02-21-2010 05:40 AM

Sounds like a job for my lil brother (electrician). Thanks Ray Ray

cmdrost 02-21-2010 04:28 PM

Like Deadly said, just know its not legal.....meaning you can still get a ticket. And yes, thats how mine is rigged too. It just is so much more functional back there out of the way.

Reel Bender 02-21-2010 08:35 PM

Wonder what happens when You buy a New Boat and it's mounted on the motor and if you get stopped and tell them that was the way it came? Do they cut ya slack and give a warning or shame on you!

cmdrost 02-22-2010 08:59 AM

no, because all dealers will tell you its not legal and some won't do it anymore.

I have always had my light mounted on the cowling and have been pulled over numerous times and never a word about it. 2 times were pre sun or post sun. Here is a picture of it.I know the picture is not very big so if you want a larger picture I can e-mail it to you. Also mine is half moon so the light does not hit me when Im night running.

a dealer wont put it on unless you ask for it because it voids the warranty on the cowling. ever price a cowling for a big motor? makes you think twice about drilling holes.

Waterbowl 02-25-2010 07:53 PM

8 out of 10 guys that that I know that have big motors are out of warranty anyway so that's the least of their worries.
