Wade fishing

Do any of you guys that wade regularly use one of them floating aids/boards when fishing?

Do you have a favorite wader or should I say a different set from your duck hunting ones?

Waded fished a little back when it first started and want to get back into it. Know one issue is knowing where to bail out at. Sunk up to my azz in a couple spots. Any other info you would like to help out with would be appreciated.

cmdrost 02-08-2010 09:42 AM

personally I use different waders for fishing and for hunting. Too prone to tear a hole in em hunting.

I use the walknwade products as my wade belt: www.walknwade.com

As far as where to go, just gotta go explore it my man. Helps you know the lake better.

LaAngler 02-08-2010 10:12 AM

magellan, hodgeman, simms for fishing, breathable waders. i use the 20 dollar stone creek neoprene boots from academy, they work great and are comfy.

cmdrost 02-08-2010 10:25 AM

Only time I would want breathables is in April or May. I use neoprenes. Then if I wade in the summer, its pants and wade boots.

Raymond 02-08-2010 10:29 AM

Had the 5mm and fleece wading pants on yesterday morning, the boys were warm and toasty.:D

Good advice but keep it coming, do y'all use a net. I had a good one wrap around a boga and break off. **** happens. I lost a nice flounder that I could have caught with a net. How many baits do you typically bring, how often do you change, Do you fish anything besides suspending baits? How deep do you wade, do you bring a stringer for smaller fish/reds/flounder? Do you shuffle your feet? Are you skeered of sting rays? How about bullsharks? I stumbled over an old crab pot and almost filled my waders. How far from the boat do you typically wade? Do you use power pro? I have experienced Mr. Little's heart ache of seeing a corky fly away with my florocarbon leader. Too many cooties in the water, I don't like wet wading. Do y'all hit the surf? I'm committed to learning the trade but I've got a ways to go. It doesn't help that I need to pee every 20 minutes. I want a Hobie kayak with the pedals. Too little time, too little money.

specktator 02-08-2010 03:53 PM

I hit the surf hard in the summer. Needs to warm up before the trout on the beach. Does get little freaky when u in the surf slammin the trout then next thing u know u reelin in a blackfin shark. I don't like stringers. Had some on stringer last year floatin behind my buddy. We pull em in to load up and the biggest trout of day prob bout 5 lbs. Is only half a trout. Now I don't think the sharks are as bad on the lake but I never tried to Wade fish the lake these other guys with more experience with that can help u. In surf I hit em hard on top till bout 9 then switch to a mirrorlure 4" soft shad on 1/4 oz jig.

summertime I wade in shorts and Crocs............

cmdrost 02-08-2010 03:55 PM

Gottogo----slow down tiger! haha

-no net for me....use boga and hand (always gonna lose a fish or 2 no matter what you do)
-bring many different baits
-use whatever situation dictates....ie...if I see fish busting bait on top, I throw topwater
-always shuffle your feet!!!

huge sting rays in there right now, nearly the size of manta rays

they seem more aggressive in cold water, bull sharks too!

"W" 02-08-2010 04:16 PM

:*****::*****:you waders are so full of crap...

LaAngler 02-08-2010 04:21 PM

not to mention the deadly bacteria and possibility of hypothermia :p

all bs aside it's better to shuffle a little so that you dont try to step over debris, it'll hang you up and you'll stumble everytime.

landing big fish = ego wade net or just play them down, leave lot of line out & put rod under arm, grab leader, then gently clamp the boga on bottom jawbone. i try not to even touch the fish, gently leave them in the water, unclip the boga and touch the tail with it and they take off.

my wade belt

I wade in shorts and crocs in summer, up here in lake chuck with the gators...figure i can run faster without waders on,and its cooler.

simplepeddler 02-08-2010 05:42 PM

I am ready to get back into it for sure

Jordan 02-08-2010 05:47 PM

imma get fool to show me the basics of wading...

specktator 02-08-2010 05:52 PM

I never used a boga and want to get one. But everytime I go I can't justify spending that much on one. Which ones do u guys use that are somewhat reasonably priced? I always just use floating basket with small plastic tackel box zipped tied and a small net tied to my basket. I have lost way too many fish especially when there is 5 ppl and no net. I've seen some buddies lose up to 10 fish in one trip. I would never wade without a net! I would vomit if I had a fish over 5 that I lost tryin to hook my boga to it!

yeah jordan's like 6 ft 6.

My waders compared to a avg. sized guy, isn't much of a difference.

speckinabox 02-08-2010 08:10 PM

For those who have boga's just a little bit of info. The red float that most recommend and have on their boga does not keep boga afloat. I tried in the pool one day before going wade fishing and it sunk to the bottom.

I appreciate that. I used to wade some back before Rita, in 03 - 05, but not alot 5 or 6 times each year. We caught fish then, on Corky Devils, Catch 2000 and topwaters.

More times than not now I am not looking for meat and would love to get more into wade fishing. I have a Boga, wade belt, net and other stuff. Going to get another pair of waders.

One big question I have is did the storms, Rita and Ike, change the lake bottom a lot? In othere words, would the places I used to wade still have decent bottoms or may be soft as sh** now?

Hope to have my new boat soon and would love to take anyone wading that is interested. As a matter of fact, I have access to a boat now even if I don't have the new boat soon. Have a 4 day weekend coming up and plan on being on the water somewhere.

Also, do you have to see bait in an area or just know the area will hold fish before bailing out?

Thanks to all of you for your help and input.

Bruce has had days when the Corky ruled, days when the Bomber ruled, days when the fish ate 'em both and days when they wouldn't touch either. He is fairly adept at fishin' that Corky, but, in all fairness, not so much a Bomber. It's not a competition between the two of us. I know, without a doubt, he'll switch over to a Bomber when I start waxin' his azz.:smokin:

eastaboga tackle brand, i paid like 90 before hookset marine gear raised prices

they make some decent knock offs but not machined out of all 316 stainless, and the scale is dead on with calcasieu point's STAR scale.

Gottogo49 02-09-2010 09:07 AM

Thanks for all the advice, I just have to try wading more often. When I wade, I usually try to catch a few fish on sand eels just to take the edge of so I don't get skunked then bail out of the boat. I made one wade trip to Mecca AKA Chandeleur Islands - We smacked em but no big fish. Sting rays were everywhere, big sharks too. I made one wade trip to East Cameron Jetties - my friend's son came with cut off shorts, no shoes,no shirt, a old red ambassador reel, his rod had the tip broken off and he caught fish after fish on a double rig with glow/chartreuse cocahoes. He eventually felt sorry for me and gave me some of his baits but I still couldn't catch em like he could. My friend says his kid does that all the time. Guess I'll just keep trying, just keep trying.

cmdrost 02-09-2010 09:26 AM

yes jcheif, the storms changed the bottom in several areas.

Areas I used to love that were sand hard bottom are now bottomless pits of soft mud.

Also, the boga is worth the money.
