Vacation Destination---opinion needed

Ok, I know its early to think about a summer vacation. My dad asked me earlier where I wanted to go for vacation around the August time frame. Reasonable choices of course. I'm thinking FL for some deep sea fishing action. Dad is thinking of Grand Canyon and NM to visit the UFO museum (I know.... How boring)! Where would u go that's reasonably priced. No hawaii or jamaica. Somewhere not too far away from home, but not one state over either! Opinions needed !

FF_T_Warren 02-23-2010 11:24 PM

cruise. Ive been wanting to go on one. Ive heard nothing but great things about cruises and very reasonable prices.

Yep........I'm going on a cruise in late April

Jordan 02-23-2010 11:27 PM

Cruises are for old people. I wanna move around a lot, not on a ship. Thanks for the thought though !

Big Lake Blondie 02-23-2010 11:41 PM

they ain't for old people...some are, but not all...always activities on board...they have a topless deck too Jordan; that's right up your alley...:*****: anything over 5 days, you start getting cabin fever though...better to go with a group of people too...

Do you fish for Bass? If so, try Bass Pro Shop's Big Cedar Lodge in Branson, MO. They have bass boats for rent to fish Table Rock Lake.

When I was in Venice the Carnival would be leaving out of N.O. & would come thru Venice about 10 pm, you could hear everyone hootin & hollerin & partying, 5 days later here it comes back up the river & not a peep! They all must have been wore out.

Plenty of sights to see, and lots of room to walk. Watch out for what is in the last picture.

We are taking the kids to live on a house boat for a week in some huge lake in northern Arkansas. Looks pretty cool from what I see so far!

Ray 02-24-2010 10:38 AM

My wife and I rented a 42 ft. houseboat in Ft. Myers Fla. for a week.
It had 3 double beds on it and a real nice galley.

Jordan 02-24-2010 10:53 AM

my dad and I love to fish, but my brother dont..... he'd rather stay home and watch TV... destin is great, my brother can swim and i can fish from the same beach...

Think im leading to destin... again..... gonna hit that parasailing up AGAIN !!!!!! 1100 feet with a piece of rope to get you back down....... FREAKING AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!

Ray 02-24-2010 11:17 AM

Go to Perdido Key. Lot cheaper than Destin and better fishing on the inside and the beach. Lot less people too.

I was on that boat this past August. Did Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel. And Jordan, our deep sea fishing is better here than in Florida. Don't go to Florida to deep sea fish.

ray, were looking into this... thanks man !!!

Ray 02-24-2010 11:41 AM

Perdido Key or Orange Beach. THey are across the bridge from each other.

Ray 02-24-2010 11:43 AM

We stayed at the Mariner Condo's on Perdido Key. They have a lauch and dock on the other side of the road on the bay side. We launched the boat and left her in the water all week. You can go to eat and drink from the water and never drive the truck.

Jordan 02-24-2010 11:43 AM

where did you stay ??? this place looks better than destin... i wanna bring my STIX and catch some reds or trout !!

Ray 02-24-2010 11:45 AM

Mariner Condo's. The bottom 2 floors were wiped out by Ivan, but they rebuilt.
You can get a beach house too.
The island is right on the Ala./Fla. line.

Ray 02-24-2010 11:46 AM

In April, you can catch Ling in the surf.

Ray 02-24-2010 11:49 AM

It cost around $2000 plus some diesel and food.
We stayed on the anchor a couple nights and the rest was at marina's and one night
at Cabbage Key in the bay.

Jordan ,
I think you just missed a cruise of a lifetime.
carnival has/had a COUGAR cruise .
The wife and i have been cruising since our hioneymoon 26 yrs ago.
You can only be bored on a cruise if you want to be bored.
there is something to do dang near 24 hrs a day.
our 1st one cost us less than $1000 for seven days.
Our last one in april 09 , Our bar bill was $1200 for 8 days.
From what i remember ,We had a blast.:rotfl:

Ray 02-24-2010 05:43 PM

Didn't Carnival just have a cruise ship that had over 300 people get sick?

My wife and I like more quiet, smaller laid back vacations. Not crowded ones.

Went to destin this year...Sanabell awhile back...panama numerous times.

Destin was my favorite. Hawse, rent you a kayak and go fish in the mornings or, go snorkel on by the last bouy (about 15 feet deep) and get sand dollars

x2...I finda way to run up a 1k+ beer tab every cruise...even if i sneak on a handle of whisky, wine, and case of beer! But I love them b/c its pure relaxation! I've been on vacations where.. when i return ....I feel like I need a vacation...lol! Not on cruises....no planning and what not....just do at will...it's all there for you..waiting. I'd peep royal carribean...food is better.

August. Head up to the Black Hills in South Dakota. Mount Rushmore, Deadwood, Crazy Horse, the Badlands. Of course you can also hit Sturgis for the rally. Great time of year to go, not too cold yet! You can hit some streams for trout -rainbow, not speckled. It would be quite an adventure.

If ya'll go to Florida go to St. Andrews State Park near Panama to fish. Its pretty awesome. They have some big rock jettis with tons of bait fish and bluefish, and a whole bunch of other fish that i couldn't identify... but i was WAXING them on some sabiki rigs with a sand eel tied to the end to weigh it down. I did see some small tarpon and 16-17in redfish, but couldn't get them to bite, but i didn't try that hard. I was having too much fun pulling in two or three bluefish at a time. Make sure to bring pliers and extra sabiki rigs, they tear them up pretty fast.

If you ever get bored look at it on Google map. You can see the jettis i was talking about. Also a good place to go snarkling, just watch out for stingrays.. i saw a few of them

Federal health officials are saying a virus caused more than 400 people to get sick on a cruise ship that left South Carolina for the Caribbean earlier this month.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention spokesman Jay Dempsey said Thursday samples taken from ill passengers have confirmed the norovirus. The main symptoms are upset stomachs, vomiting and diarrhea.
Norovirus is often to blame when symptoms sweep closed quarters like those on cruise ships.
The Celebrity Mercury is due in Charleston early Friday. Celebrity Cruise spokeswoman Cynthia Martinez says 413 of the more than 2,600 passengers and crew became ill.
The illness reached its peak early this week. Martinez says 48 guests are in isolation as the ship heads back to Charleston.
