transporting rods
for those of you that have bay boats do yall leave your rods in the rod holders on the console while trailoring......i have always taken mine down and put in the bottom of the boat. but it scratches my reels bad. Just wondering if yall ever loose any rods by leaving them in the holders
mine ride shotgun in the truck with me, or in the rod lockers in my flats boat
I usually leave mine in the rod holders standing up. I put mine in the back of the truck when I went to toledo bend last weekend and scratched the mess out of my reels. Wont do that again without covers on them.
i don't think mine will fit in my truck.....normally i have 2 or 3 people inside. and i don't have a rod box. guess i should have got a bigger boat
noone sits up front
Back of the truck with rod and reel covers.
or the head for that matter
i like mine locked inside when i stop at stores for food/fuel
keep em honest |
yeah i guess that is what im gonna have to start doing or get me some reel covers

Done that more than once:pissed: |
I'm about to make a few "SpecDaddy Dandy Rod Holders" for myself. Stop by my office and I can show you the drawings of them. When I had a bay boat I did snap 2 tips and left one hanging from the drive thru at a Wendys. Now I just stow them in my rod boxes but was never a fan of leaving them in the boat on the floor or in the rod holders
Wish I had rod boxes. The storage on my fishmaster sucks:(.
I have reel covers and throw them in the back of my truck
Go to CPI designs and order u some aluminum rod rockets that mount in the truck bed. Hopefully I'll get me one soon. I think they $125 maybe even less
so yall think they would fall out if i left them in the rod holders on the console
You got to worry about low hanging tree branches too, know a guy that lost a couple by the tip of the rod hanging up in trees and never seeing them again.

when i lived in lake charles mine road in the rod holders in the boat but never got over 60mph, never had a problem other than the already stated height restrictions
The only problem I ever had carrying them in the rod holders was a hook coming loose and making all of the rods a tangled mess.
Left mine in the rod holders on console coming back from west cove launch on hwy 27 in the evening twice, the mosiquitos were caked on my rods & even the line. Took a week of cleaning them to get it all off with WD-40! Put 'em in my rod boxes now.
I keep them in the truck passenger seat or in the center console rod holders.
I usually fish by myself. I don't have anyone in the passenger seat. |
I usually just leave them in my rod holders as long as i wont be driving under any low trees and i have never had a problem
I look at it this way, you take a chance of breaking them no matter where you put them. If you had rod boxes that would be best. Since you don't then back of truck, laying on floor in boat, in the cab of truck or in rod holders in console there are risks to be had anywhere. So if I am not stopping long at a store then I leave them in the console. That is just because it is easier for me. I know people will say they had them in console and this and that happened to them, but having them in front or back of truck they never had any problems. Well I used to keep them there and I have broken more rods than I would like to count. I now let them ride in the console and for 4 years now not one broken.
yeah mine ride in the console...no problems
I've seen the pvc rocket launcer type deal in guide boats at spicers...

now let billystix add some thought this thread, i have read each thing posted and most likley over the years i have tried each thing that you all have done.
now the one thing that no body has given thought to , a rod in the stand up postion in your boat "yes it will fly out trees and such also tangle" but here is a thought that no body has ever given thought to and i as the rod builder i know a little about ""rod stress"" traviling down the highway 6o to 80 mph guess how much whip and whip and whip and whip you put on your custom billystix at that speed or your other rods then when you are out fishing one day and you pick up your favorite rod with #60 or#30 and you go to make a long hard cast or you go up and set a hard set ""snap"" yep you guessed it dam, frigginnn wortheless rod broke the first cast :cry::cry::cry:wonder why:help: stress on the roasd and over rated line test for said rod. now i am not trying to preach but it is a fact that i learned many years ago, a rod will whip itself to pcs in a stand up postion in a traveling boat and then i hear " aw man i take dang good care of my equipt and yes you do take good care of your equipt, but you just failed to know that you placed your valuable equipt in harms way by traviling down the highway at 60 to 80 with that rod whiping in the wind putting undo and unnatural stress on said rod. just some good rod advice from the rod man. :D stix |
Where you been Billy?

Crown royal bags as reel covers and that black pipe insulation as rod covers lets them ride safely in the bed of your truck.
A sock works pretty good as a reel cover.
stix is right, 70 mph in the truck on a windy day that rod is under some stress. plus if it bangs up against the grabrail even worse...
Just let them hang out the back window like the democrats do... All with poppin-corks on them...
I have mine shotgun in the truck, I don't pay as much as many of you for rods and reels but I'd still like to keep them from being stolen.

All mine stay in my truck. At all times. When the lil lady rides with me she just has to share shotgun. Never know when I'm gonna go fishin, sobi stay ready.
I have thought about mounting some rod holders on the bottom side of my truck bed cover. I did the measurements and turned diagonal I can fit 7 1/2 ft rods. I may look into this soon. |
