My four legged friend

Just remember that when a dog gets on up in age and their health starts to fail. that you are doing the right thing in passing them over the rainbow bridge.
My prayers go out to you and your friend.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Bob, I know you're right, but, every day since then I said, "I wish I had one more day". I've wondered many times in the past year if my decision was too hasty.

Red Devil 03-31-2010 07:31 PM

I feel your pain Chip. There is only one thing to do now. Get another one.

B-Stealth 03-31-2010 07:40 PM

Asterisk-Rich 03-31-2010 09:02 PM

Sorry to hear that bro

Ray 03-31-2010 09:03 PM

I had to put down a 15 year old lab.
Someone stole a 12 year old lab.
Last one died at 10 years old, when I was at work.
My wife took him to the vet for a yearly and let them board him for a weekend
while she was out of town. He died of a genetic disorder. The vet's office took
care of everything, no charge, even for his annual check up and they sent some
money to a doggy site for a memorial for him. T-neg Duhon.

dogs

The wife and i are not big dog folks. We adopt chihuahuas. have had to put 4 down . we waited 3 yrs before we adopted this one. Tiny is a dog that someone dropped off telling the store that they couldn't afford to take care of the dogs and cat any more.

Zachary Boy 03-31-2010 09:49 PM

I'll say a prayer for ya man, I know I'll need prayers when my pup leaves me. We are both getting some time on us. Hope you find some comfort...

craziekajn 04-01-2010 09:54 AM

SOrry to hear youo had to put your best friend down. I have a sign my wife found that we put up. Says dogs are just children with fur. I fully believe that. Am not looking forward to the day our boston dies or has to be put down.

Big Lake Blondie 04-02-2010 10:47 PM

So sorry for the loss...I know how much my dogs mean to me...They really are "mans best friend"...I know mine have gotten me through times I otherwise wouldn't have made it through...They are a shoulder to cry on, a friend to laugh with and the most loyal companion anyone could ask for...As long as you have your memories, they are never really gone :)

dmouton272 04-03-2010 04:35 AM

I know the feeling. Two weeks ago my 12yr old German Shepard had to be put down at 10pm at emergency vet clinic. I cried like a baby too. Then I had to explain to my 3 kids and wife, the next day, how he got sick and died. He had just turned 12yrs old two days before this. Then came burial time in the back yard. That was his yard, because when I bought this property I got him as a puppy. He guarded it and my family well. I want another one but not sure I'm ready for that again. :(

Stayed away from this post because I too have been through the same thing several times. The following was sent to me this morning by a friend and it sums up a dog's life quite well, enjoy.

A Dog's Purpose
Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracleI examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experienceThe next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker 's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.'Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanationHe said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live agood Life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right? The Six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogsalready know how to do that, so theydon't have to stay as long.'So live like a dog:Live simply.Love generously.Care deeply.Speak kindly.Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like: When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.Take naps.Stretch before rising.Run, romp, and play daily.Thrive on attention and let people touch you.Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass. On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree. When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.Delight in the simple joy of a long walk. Be loyal.Never pretend to be something you're not.If what you want lies buried, dig until you find itWhen someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.
ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY

Thanks Raymond, I like that.......

Yea Dink "Marley and Me" was defiantly a tear jerker. Whoever made that movie must have had an old lab; I couldn’t believe how accurately the dog aged.
