Brake trouble

Mods, im not sure if this is in the right spot, if not, move it please.

I have a 1997 chevy 1/2 ton 1500 P/U.

Went to get the oil changed about 4 days ago, the guy put new brake fluid in the reservior, cause he said it was a little low.

Problem: When I push the brakes, I have to pretty much stomp them to the floor to stop. It sounds like an air leak coming from inside the cab.... just a constant psssssssssssssssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. When I finally get stopped, the truck starts sputtering like it wants to die out.

What I've done: Looked at the reservior to make sure there is still fluid and also made sure the cap was on right along with the seal.

My Question: Is there air in the lines ??

I need to get this fixed....

yak'em-n-stack'em 04-26-2010 11:47 AM

Sounds like master cylinder to me

Dink 04-26-2010 11:49 AM

the big drum looking thingy (probably black)that the "reservoir" is bolted to is the culprit.......There is a vacuum line that runs to it.........check it. If your looing vacuum, your truck will run funny and it'll make that sound when on the brakes..........If not the line, its broke........They arent expensive and are easy to change.......

You still need to check for a vacuum leak! even though "You still have brakes & just can't stop like you use ta could":shaking:

lol My thoughts exactly!!

Red Devil 04-26-2010 12:14 PM

Sounds like it's the brake power booster. I had a 98 that did the same thing.

Jordan 04-26-2010 12:15 PM

imma try bleeding them... simplest things first..

wtretrievers 04-26-2010 12:18 PM

Air in the brake lines won't make your truck engine sputter. Got to be a vacuum leak. Check any hoses coming off the master cylinder drum. The "big black thingy" as Dink calls it!

wtretrievers 04-26-2010 12:28 PM

btw.........you'll need a 2nd person to help with brakes, so you might as well get them to step on the brakes & see if you can locate where the "psssssssssssssssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hh" sound is coming from!

Jordan 04-26-2010 12:35 PM

Yep, I had a 97 about 2 years ago did the same thing, the symptoms sound exactly the same.

Note: I changed it myself and it was not fun.

CatDaddy 04-26-2010 01:05 PM

You headlight fluid is low, and you need to re-torque the tire pressure!!!

But for real..... Do what Dink said..

You sure it has nothing to do with the flux capacitor??

Asterisk-Rich 04-26-2010 01:59 PM

Master cylinder...just had to change the one on my bronco

Jordan 04-26-2010 02:02 PM

jamin, are u in this saturday??

CatDaddy 04-26-2010 05:04 PM

I beleive i have a fishing trip planned since 3 weeks ago..... Ill let you know when i come in..

Montauk17 04-26-2010 06:49 PM

It could be alot of things...master cly, wheel cly, brake booster, ect. Check behind your wheels for leaks, that will eliminate the wheel clys and calipers. I have the same body style truck and just changed damn near the entire brake system. When it comes to brakes don't play around.I used to manage a meineke car center...seen some crazy stuff.

Jordan 04-26-2010 08:14 PM

Got it to my buddy. He said it was master cylinder. I'd step on brakes and u could see bubbles coming out of the side. Everything else is good. Gonna get it fixed tomorrow

Dink 04-26-2010 08:19 PM

Wow........I would have bet on the black thingy.......

Jordan 04-26-2010 09:05 PM

$50 and I get a black thingy to play with

Jordan 04-26-2010 09:05 PM

Maybe when I'm done, she won't go "pssssssssssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhshshshshshshsh shshshshshshshshshshshshshshshshhhhhhhhhh" anymore
