I emailed shimano...

This is what they said:

Michael,

Unfortunately there is no serial number on this reel model. We advise all of our customers to not purchase "new" Shimano reels through ebay. There is way too much fraud and situations beyond our control. Always support your local dealer to ensure you have received a quality Shimano product.

So I guess there is no way to see if they are refurb reels. I'm Calling Adam later on today when I get time. For all we know academy sells refurbs if there is no way of telling a refurb from new. And a receipt dosent mean crap about new or refurb just let's them know where u purchased it from.

He's gonna tell you his reels are brand new, and, they probably are.

So what if this Adam guy is like W?? What if he has a shimano contact who sells him reels at discount prices and then turns and sells them on eBay...?? Is this not possible?? Or maybe even his discount is better than w's is...?? Adam is not under any contract to sell at a set price....or maybe he jacks shimano trucks when they are unloading at academy?? Who knows the point is y would they not be New if he says they are...he has a business and integrity to look out for...I'm personally making a trip over that a ways this weekend if I can get ahold of him...aint but 15 minutes away and it's worth my time....hell I'm even gonna go get some Bush house of seafood when I'm that ways....

That's what we are saying. W said it was refurb because it's cheaper than what he gets them and that can't happen because he's awesome and nobody gets better deals than him.

I can tell you how he is getting his reels - he's buying through a wholesaler, and they probably are new. But wholesalers have terms that you have to abide by - i.e. you have to honor MAP pricing for all products sold with very little exception.

[I am caveating this if you care] You get no warranty through this route as A: He's not an authorized retailer and B: He's selling them below MAP.

He's selling at that price as that's the only way to get the business...

For all we know your reels are refurb because they are cheap. You should be selling them at shimanos set price. I don't think u should sell one more reel untill u can PROVE they are new. You don't even provide a receipt so how can your customer send in for warranty? Call shimano and say I need my reel repaired under warranty oh u need a receipt. Oh I bought it from some guy down the road he didn't give me a receipt. Yeah that would hold up well. Only thing all this arguing has shown is that ur no better than eBay if not worse. Good job at super failing once again
