Sacrificial anode on Aluminum boat
 

I'm in the process of rejuvenating an older model Lowe 16' aluminum. Used it years ago and it sat for several years. Didn't know the dangers of brackish/saltwater and aluminum, found small corrosion marks under bunks and on transom. I filled these pin holes and covered them with JB Weld Waterweld.

After putting in the work of patching, sanding, cleaning, priming and painting, I want to mitigate this potential problem as much as possible. For the aluminum boat owners, where did you place your sacrificial anode, and what size did you use?

I was thinking about installing this one on the transom below the waterline before I get to painting the back.

Thoughts or advice?

My motor is bolted to my boat and the anode on the motor takes care of both.

If you were to have a jack plate installed would that Anode still be efficient enough or would you add another? It seems it would be because the jack plate is connecting the boat and motor. I plan on adding a atlas micro and was curious on this.

Do you have the boat sitting on carpet with treated wood for runners? Do you know if the transom is treated wood under the aluminum? Anodes will help with galvanic corrosion but sounds like the boat is sitting oncarpet runners. If so, then change them out to bunk slides made of poly plastic. Also, its a good idea to clean you anode on the motor and the one you are going to install with a wire wheel when they chalk over. Good luck.

My aluminum boat is over 30 years old. No anode. Carpet on the bunks was eating away at it just like you described. I replaced the boards with treated wood but then screwed on plastics slicks on top of that so the aluminum doesn't contact the wood directly. I got the strips at academy and it was well worth it. Comes in a kit.

Apparently there is some chemical reaction if you place aluminum on treated wood so don't do this without the plastic strips!

I fish almost weekend without fail for the last four years with the current boards. No issues.

not to mention, the plastic sliders last forever and wont rot or tear like the carpet does

trouble I have is my boards are on end and I haven't found any sliders designed for 1 1/2" board ends
