Sabine Island WMA

On google earth there looks like there is a dirt boat launch down Salters Bluff Rd. Does anyone know if this is public? Thanks in advance.

cajun86 08-25-2012 09:58 AM

Or where to get permission?

weedeater 08-25-2012 01:36 PM

Unless things have changed then yes its public and its free, sure there will be a sign if things changed

Thanks. Not familiar with area trying to get some info. Any tips or things to lookout for? I will be launching a kayak and plan to do some scouting on northern part of island.

Watch the current because it can get real strong in that area and there, we hunted there yrs ago and I plan to start again this yr..... study Google earth, bring GPS and compass and the highline or pipeline areas are good boundaries to follow

There is a launch on Bass Lake Rd. just on the back side of Starks. Wouldn't be far to paddle.

Thanks

Ive been hunting the island for 10 plus years and this year has the most hogs than ive ever seen, so get ready to see plenty of them!

Duckhunter2007 08-25-2012 10:55 PM

Be careful at them launches I had things stole out the back of my truck, I launch at nibblets, they have a camera there now.

nimbus73 08-26-2012 03:15 AM

True, True. Launch at your own risk!

I'm from Starks and I launch at bass lake ramp all the time. I don't think I would kayak down stream. The current is generally pretty strong especially at the cut just north of the island that comes from the main river. It would be a tough paddle back to the launch.

And the salters bluff ramp is pretty washed out, but just putting a kayak in should be no problem. If you have any other questions or need someone to go with on the island just shoot me a pm. I've been hunting the north end my whole life.

nimbus73 08-26-2012 05:41 PM

Hey Bear, do you know where to get on them hogs out there?

Duckhunter2007 08-26-2012 11:09 PM

Just go anywhere on the island and you will find hogs, walk in the woods 20 yards and look down and see hog tracks everywhere

nimbus73 08-27-2012 02:25 AM

I haven't hunted out there in years. My just have to take a little hike and bring my medicine gun for them hogs.

I'm on 7 12s right now so I haven't had time to go looking but like everyone said. Just look down there will be tracks. I'll be trying to get out there during bow season after I get back from Kansas. I know last year they were thick by south of the pipeline. I never seen any but my brother in law seen a bunch.

Duckhunter2007 08-27-2012 05:48 PM

Yes it's from the island

Gerald 08-27-2012 11:34 PM

Biggest hog I ever saw was at the Island.

It was late and I was about to climb down when I heard something walking in the water. It would walk a little and stop for a while. Then it got on higher ground but I could hear it hitting Palmetto plants.

I finally got a quick look in the dim light, when it was ~50 yards away. I was not sure what I had just seen. It was so big, I thought it might have been a bear. It was very dark in color and about the right shape.

When it got to an area with less brush, I saw it was a big hog....maybe 250-300 lbs but I missed my only chance at a clear shot with the rifle.

If I would have shot it, I am not sure how I would have gotten it back to my boat by myself and then how would I have lifted it into the boat.
