Poor man's duck food planting

I've heard of people planting cheap birdseed to grow a kind of mix for ducks along edges of ponds and mud flats. Idea being that the cheaper birdseed won't be coated to prevent germination or sprouting, so you could spread it and grow mix of grassy plants like milo, millet, etc.
Anybody tried this?
