Shotgun Opinion

I am looking at getting a new shotgun for duck hunting. Two years ago I bought a cheap auto and wish I did not. I cannot afford the nicer good auto's so I decided to get a good pump. What do ya'll think of the Benelli Nova? Or what are other suggestions on pumps? Thanks

Pumps are great shotguns. They do jam sometimes but are easily fixed in the field. I have had great luck with the Browning BPS. I been carrying one around the marshes and rice fields for 15 years now, and NEVER had one lick of trouble with it.

The winchester 870 is also a great shotgut for the price. Very dependable shotguns.

Benelli Nova is a good gun from what i hear, but i dont really have enough experiance with one to give you information about it. I do have an over and under and an automatic and dont have any trouble with them.

If i were to ever buy another pump shotgun it would be a BPS, Mainly because im used to it and thats what I feel comfortable shooting.

If you are frustraited with autos because you got a cheap one, dont be, there are very dependable autos out there, like the beretta extrema and the extrema2 (a little pricey, but well worth it) I have one and its been thru hell and back and is still very dependable, even spent 2 nights under marsh humis.

I shoot a Browning Auto but I bought my son a Benelli Nova and he has hunted with it for the last 2 seasons. He is a 17 year old and is rough as hell on his equipment and there have been no problems with the gun. Just my info for owning a gun for 2 years.

The Nova is a good gun. I have several of my friends that hunt with them and havent had any problems with them.

If you are getting auto get a Benelli or a Beretta. The only other I would get would be the Winchester X3. I also have a Benelli Super Nova pump in addition to my Benelli SBE2. I have had it for 2 years with no compliants.

+1 on the BPS. Lifetime gun. Got one for LSU graduation 20 years ago and never had a problem. I won a Benelli Nova 20ga, and it is a sweet little gun, lightweight, easy to carry, but gets jammed up too much. That last shell doesn't go all the way into the magazine when you're in a hurry, and bam, you're taking it apart...again.

friends on our lease have the novas, seem to be great guns. I grew up shooting the browning bps without any problems. Never shot autos until about 8 yrs ago,I bought a benelli super black eagle----never used my browning again, its smoothe like sandwich spread.lol

I shoot alot of trap & skeet. Have shot or owned most of 'em. Bought a Berretta 390 several years back & It is amazing. Have shot cases upon cases through it without a problem.

Benelli's & the Browning are also excellant choices, have several Brownings & a Benelli auto, I love my Berretta!

If price is an issue which it is for most of us, Berretta makes a syntheic in a 390 & some of the walmarts that still carries guns usually sell it & runs around $550 not bad price!

90% of the problems with auto's is because they are dirty, They must be cleaned!!!!!!!!!

I hunted with an 870 for almost 20 years. Never would think about anything else.
I got a Nova for Christmas and didn't use it for 2 years because I loved my 870.
When I finally broke it out and shot it, I liked it more than the old 870.
The are both very dependable guns. I hunted in fresh water for 10 years, then in
brackish/salt water for 25 years. Just rinse off with fresh water and spray with
oil and wipe. At the end of the split, take down and give it a good cleaning.

Which ever one you get....get the camo model. If you hunt in the marsh you do not have to worry about any rust if you do not spray it down good from the salt water. My SBE2 is the black syn. and my Nova pump is camo. I regret not getting the camo...

One thing to think of if you get the bps. Make sure you learn how to take it apart. With the bottom ejection it can be tricky. With that beign said mine came out of my gun case one my 4 wheeler and it stayed under water for thirty minutes before found it. I took it all apart and it has never missed a beat since. My best advise though would be to save your money a buy a sbe2. I think by far this is the best duck hunting gun on the market. Best of luck!!!

Thank ya'll for all the advice. My brother-in-law said he would let me borrow his 870 till I bought something else. My brother has a SBE2 and it is a very nice gun. That is what I will look to buy one day. Right now with trying to pay and arm and a leg to get into a lease I will settle for a gun that goes "boom, boom, boom."

wtretrievers,
I hear you about cleaning an auto but my problem was buying a TSA piece of garbage. The store I bought it at has replaced several parts for me because I know the guy but two of my other brothers have the same gun and we all have the same problems. The plastic pieces on the gun were not made for shooting heavy load. Thanks again for all the advice. It will be very helpful in my upcoming purchases.

Ray 08-03-2009 02:59 PM

I bought a Nova about 7 years ago. It was $350. I didn't think that was bad.
The automatics are what cost a bunch.

cmdrost 08-03-2009 03:00 PM

I love my BPS....only wish it shot 3 1/2's Have had it for close to 15 years with no problems.

I bought a Nova about 3 years ago because I needed the 3 1/2's for the goose field. No problems with it either.

BPS is high end pump. Can't go wrong with Nova or 870. Great guns that take a beating.
