Lucky Lure...

Early on in my fishing days I was given a drop of wisdom. It wasn't told to me, it was displayed. I was down in the rigolets with my grandfather, dragging a gold johnson spoon and catching a few rats here and there as my grandfather watched his popping cork over a jig with shrimp bob in the water. After a while he asked to see my lure. He looked it over and told me to try tossing his spoon for a minute. That wisdom is that not all spoons are created equal. Five consectutive casts, five consecutive fish. From then on, I was hooked (pun very much intended). I've since had a few of them in the box for every fishing trip, for both fresh and saltwater. I've fished them everywhere from small ponds to the gulf, lake pontchartrain to the pen and it has always produced bites.

I see guys fishing with all kinds of different gold spoons, and yet it seems that this particular lure never caught on (can't even seem to find them in any stores in my area and have only seen them in one particular convenience store down in the Lafitte area) but I'm here to let the cat out of the bag (although they may be wildly popular elsewhere, maybe even on this forum).

For reds, a 1/2 oz, Acme Wob-L-Rite Hammered Gold Spoon will do you right and for specks and even largemouth bass, their 1/4 oz hammered gold offering will get their attention.

Anyone else have a certain lure that is just your go-to, gotta have it in the box or I can't go fishing, lure?

Now, I understand that some fisherman and hunters like to keep their "secrets" close to their vest but I've never been that way. I'll show you on the map where I caught that lunker, what I caught him on and will probably even take you there... lol

So, fess up, which lure in your box seems to have a rabbits foot attached to it?

Can you post a picture of these lures? I have a few very old spoons, maybe I have one of those.

I think I have a couple of them.

For bass fishing...... I find it hard to bet a "lazy-Ike".

Dang i thought i was the only one that had them wobble rights hidden in the tackle box. Many years ago my brother and i were fishing the do gris pit on La1. 1/4 oz silver wobble rite was the only thing the specks would hit. Happened to have a card of them. Other fishermen were offering $20 a pop to get their hands on the bait.

I have had a few of them. Shorter and thicker than most spoons, can cast them a mile...

Agreed, even in heavy wind can get them way out there and the flutter on the way down makes sight fishing really fun.

well, maybe this is why I havent caught much on spoons...I don't have one of those.

alphaman 07-30-2014 06:37 PM

I got one but never used it. How do you fish it?

Try one out if you can find them. They run about 4 bucks.

Cajun83 07-30-2014 06:45 PM

I use it as a locator, basically. Bomb it out there and pull it back in fast. If no bites, reel it back a bit slower. Between the wobbling wounded bait fish action, those hammered facets reflecting light (think disco ball) and the two split rings rattling around, you'll likely get a reaction strike. It's heavy and sinks like a rock so sometimes I'll run it stop and go, it flutters on its way down.

Optima is my first choice for reds, but i prefer interstate for trout.

Well this is mine, redfish magic spinnerbait. If i had 1 lure to fish, this would be it.

BienveWho 07-30-2014 10:20 PM

FYI Pack and Paddle in lafayette just started carrying those ACME Wob-L-Rite Hammered spoons.

My go to bait

I have no problem telling anyone! I love to fish Leeville , since I absolutely love throwing top water, I'd say a red/white top dog junior . It's a great bait and have had great success using it. I know I can leave the launch, catch my limit if reds with it and be back to the landing with in a hour .

Specks-- rattle cork, w/ glow shrimp. Rigged 2' below cork on 12lb test mono.
