What dis is?

Shot this dude friday. Wanted to call it a mallard / gad at first but the wings and bill are throwing me off. The pics don't do it much justice, but the top of the head has the iridescent purple tint that a full plume bull gad has. His tail had sort of a limp curl instead of a full curl, and it was calling like a mallard drake prior to me shooting it in the face. Got it in the freezer right now gunna take somewhere asap to get an opinion on mounting it (open for opinions on this also). Messed both wings up pretty bad so I'm assuming a flying mount it out of the questions. I've never had one mounted, and never planned on having one done, but this seems like a good Christmas present idea for the ol lady. I know ALL of you guys are certified waterfowl biologists so help me out here.

Got some green wing teal in him for sure.

That's a tough call. But I'm gonna have to agree with to on the mallard/grey hybrid.

As for taxidermists. Steve German in Hackberry or Buckhorn Taxidermy in Mowata.

brewers duck

I've heard of a brewers duck, and this seems to be one, but I'm still not sure the origin of it. What crossed what exactly?

That's a GWY X MALLARD hybrid. Some yrs we kill several hybrid some zero. A mallard will breed anything it can

gadwall88 11-16-2015 11:28 AM

Maybe widgeon mallard hybrid based off the wing?

If it was a teal cross I'd assume it would be much smaller. This one was the size of a normal mallard

aquaholic 11-16-2015 01:07 PM

All the mallard x teal that we see are the size of mallards. It's head coloring gives the teal part away. Plus the speckling on rusty chest feathers. Cool bird though!!!

Definitely a Brewers duck

I believe the brewers duck is the most common cross bread we kill, and yes Mallards will breed with anything.

Wonder what the brewers duck produces when it breeds back with a Gadwall?

Dat Be Awesome! If you killed it congratulations. If I killed a hybrid I think I would mount it.

On a side note my uncle killed a bluewing in Bell City on Friday that was banded in August next to Yorkton, Saskatchewan. 1,500 mile trip.

Yea my cousin killed one years ago in Sabine that he calls a Brewers duck. Looked basically the same as mine. I still don't see how a mallard / teal would be as big as a standard mallard though. From everything I'm reading a "Brewers" is just a name for a Mal / Gad cross.

Bring it to Steve and Josh German to mount
They are awesome taxidermist

B-Stealth 11-16-2015 04:03 PM

When "targeting" the Brewers duck do y'all modify the "Bounce Da Hen" call with a short Gadwall "gag-ga-ga-ga" quack.

I need to start practicing holding both calls, I might make a special adapter for my DR-85 to hold the Gadwall call.

You've got to bait the field with correct mix of hops and yeast to bring in a Brewer's duck;)
