Best Bait Caster for Young Boy
I am going to get my son his first baitcaster for his birthday. What is the best one for a young boy to learn on? I remember seeing a thread on here before about this but can't find it.

Shimano just came out with a new Citica that looks nice. I taught my coworker on a curado last week.

all I fish is shimano.. had some lews on my boat a few weeks ago and I was not impressed. Can't go wrong with the old white chronarchs. they cast very easily... but they are also $200. If you're looking for something cheaper I've heard that the Academy H2o reels are good, but never fished them.

Just get him just about anything that's decent quality. I don't even remember how young I was when I started using them. I was a youngster too. That's all my dad used so I had to learn or just sit and watch lol.

Get a reel w/ the magnetic braking system . Tighten it down to train his / her thumb. Then gradually loosen it as they learn to gain distance. spool it w/ 12 lb mono . and out in the yard for practice.

He can learn technique with any model, but always easier with a good reel, i.e. Shimano. Once he educates his thumb he'll be good with whatever he's using.

Lew's American Hero.
Teaching a 9 year old to use a bait caster should be interesting.
My 9 year old still tangles up his Zebco 33 in ways that are not possible according to the laws of physics.

Mine has a spin caster down, but he was dying to sling a boat full of my buddies bait casting reels on a trip to Santee Last weekend. I told him I would buy him one of his own so that he could learn without me having to explain to my buddy why all his reels were F'ed up.

Buy the hardest one to throw with lots of extra mono. Once he can cast the hardest he can cast any of em!! Lol

My 8 yr old has the cheap Shakespeare combo from Academy and it works well. The rod is kinda flimsy but he's caught bass, reds, and trout on it.

I lok down the spool tension on my reels, and let them use my stuff. Once they start complaining about distance, i let them make the adjustments.

That is very good advice!! Also don't let them get discourged we all know how aggivating it is to get a bad backlash out just imagine how much that would aggrivate a young kid. Just stay postive and make it fun. If you do it should be a sucess.

Don't forget that the action and strength of the pole have a lot to do with how well it cast too. I'd go with an h20 express combo because there are so many too choose from. But something in a medium strength fact action with a magnetic break should be an easy setup to learn on.
