Shrimp Story

I have an extremely quirky redneck uncle who is very obsessive compulsive. He does everything on a schedule and has to plan everything. If his schedule is broken or something doesn't fall into place like it should he gets all out of whack. Even the food he eats each week is on a schedule. We always try to throw little kinks in his plans to mess him up. He is so set in his ways that he will not fish with any other guides and he will not fish in my boat to catch reds to save his life. He goes fishing every year with the same guide to go catch redfish, he wants nothing to do with trout. The guide takes him and whomever into the marsh and they catch their 20 reds and never get 2 miles from the boat ramp. The guide loves him because he is back at the ramp early, never has to burn gas, etc. He was to go fishing as he does every year down to Golden Meadow but Hurricane Isaac messed up the dates and the guide had to rearrange. He couples this trip with picking up 50 lbs of shrimp to bring home. He is out of whack, and asked me if I was going down to Grand Isle anytime soon because he is out of shrimp. He cooks his shrimp on a schedule you see, so if he runs out it is going to be bad:rotfl: Last year he was bragging about his 'fresh' shrimp he got, and I told him that they looked like IQF and explained that to him but he didn't believe me. He goes back to the shrimp person and they tell him they were quick frozen and it was like someone shot his dog or something. He says he doesn't want to make a special trip down there because its hunting season. I tell him that Delcambre is about 20 minutes from me and you can buy shrimp right off the boat. He asks where they come from and I say Vermilion Bay and he says those are not the same:work: I say they are all white shrimp that come right from the same Gulf of Mexico, but he will not accept this. I do have to go to Grand Isle, but I am not getting him any shrimp from there. This is a huge decision for this guy. He has to decide whether he is going to miss a weekend of hunting to make a trip to get shrimp, or get the lowly VBay shrimp from me! He will spend $100 on gas to get $150 worth of shrimp. I also told him they will pack em and ship em right to his door but he is skeptical. I know cool story, but he will literally be completely out of whack all week thinking about this decision.

Ya'll want to hear a shrimp story?

Well here's one anyway.

I was in the Hospital staying with my PawPaw one night. It was about 3 AM and I heard NEG, NEG, NEG..... so I jump out from my sleep and I say whats wrong Paw Paw.... he said "I ever told you about the time I had Nonc MaMan deck handin on the Miss Marie with me?"

I said "no Paw what happened!"

He said "we were out shrimpin one night off the beaches catching some nice shrimp, doin real good. We had just picked up and cleaned up and put back over and I told Nonc MaMan to hold the wheel I was going to go lay down for a nap. he told me he really didn't know where he was going, So I said MaMan just follow that boat right there that's Tib (his brother), he knows where he's going.....wake me up in 45 minutes. So I went lay down and Nonc MaMan he never he woke me up I woke up on my own about 2 hours later. I woke up and I look at the ropes and the ropes are almost straight down. I said MaMan what the hell you doing I told ya to follow Tib and his boat light, Nonc MaMan sais Mais I am following the light look its right there....... So my PawPaw looked out the window to see that MaMan was following a ship into the shipping lanes"

My PawPaw told me he didn't have a depth finder at the time but he had 400' of rope and they were almost straight down. The stories that man could tell would have you laughing so hard you would cry.

He also told me one time they were shrimping around Venice by the mouth of one the cuts. Something happened and he fell overboard and no one noticed, he some kind of way made it to the ropes pulling the trawl and pulled his way all the way back to the boat. He said that was scardest he had ever been in his life and he served in two wars.

There were shrimpers selling shrimp in Grand Isle this past weekend for $2/lb, off the boats.
I gets mine from Cameron, right off the boats.

Top Dawg 10-22-2012 04:35 PM

I catch mine next to W's club foot!

gasdad 10-22-2012 05:24 PM

you can look at delcambreseafooddirect.com and the boats coming in tell you what they caught and when they will be there. Its pretty cool, but they are from the Gulf in Vermilion Parish rather than Jefferson or Cameron Parish so they are inferior:D

I don't buy shrimp, I can get them for trading work in Cameron.
But there is always someone at one of the launches passing the word about shrimp for sale, from the boats.
Herk Bergeron told me about a boat when I was at Bridge Side.
There is usually a boat at Gulf Stream selling shrimp also.
I get hit up all the time over there and the price is almost always the same.
