West Texas Axis hunt

Hey folks how about a few photos from an Axis hunt I took in May out to a ranch in West Texas. There has been a lot of rain this spring/summer in Texas and the rivers and creeks are really up! I took a decent Axis buck with a lot of mass and my buddy also killed a nice velvet buck as well. I'll post some photos from the ranch as well as a photo of the Axis I took. I killed him late on the last evening of the hunt after chasing a really wide buck for 2 days without getting a shot on him. FYI I normally hunt with a custom 6.5 Creedmoor and an old Remington model 700 300WM. I've got several really good Axis already mounted in my living room and office so I just cut the horns off of this buck because I loved the dark color of his antlers. He was 32"x31.5" long with exceptional mass and I've already eaten several meals with him being the guest of honor. If you've never tried Axis meat then as the old Toby Keith song says "get ya some" It's incredible. We managed to get in a little fishing as well. It was a great time and I'm already planning my next trip out west. Later folks, Baker
OBTW one of the photos is of rain water pouring out of one of the many caves on the ranch! |

A few more photos. A blurry photo of two good bucks that my wife took from about 350 yards away while I was trying to get a shot on one of them. another photo of a couple Rhea's crossing the river. I thought they hated the water:p. More fishing pics as well.

And a few of the bucks we took. I'll try to post a video my wife took of the shot. The buck I killed is in the back walking between two cedars and you will see several other Axis bucks sneaking out to the right as well as some Blackbuck in front

What outfitter did you use? Looks great out there. Also how has that 6.5 performed on game? What round are you pushing?

Hello Roy I was hunting at the Ox ranch west of Uvalde, Texas. It's 18K acres and is very well managed for many different types of game.
http://www.oxhuntingranch.com My 6.5 Creedmoor shoots like a dream, very flat and is a true wind cheater. The BC is outstanding and it will deliver a strong punch way,way down range. I haven't tried any Hornady factory loads yet but I will. Right now I'm shooting some 130grain accubonds with 42grains of RL17. |
Thank you sir.
