Boat help please
 

aLRIGHT SO I KNOWDECED THAT MY STEERING WAS KIND OF STIFF ON MY BOAT SO I GREASED THE MOTOR O GIVE SO I DECIDE TO LOSSEN THE NUT BENEITH THE STEERING WHEEL THAT HOLDS IN THE CABLE.SO I LOOSEN IT THEN PULL THE CABLE OUT AND GREASE IT REAL GOOD THEN STICK IT BACK IN AND WORK IT IN SPINNING THE STEERING WHEEL GOES BACK IN FINE THEN I RETIGHTEN THE NUT THAT HOLDS IT IN AND NADDA NOW THE STEERING WHEEL WONT TURN A BIT.wHEN I TOOK ITFF IT TURNED JUST NOT WELL I HAE ALREADY GREASED EVERY THING ON THE MOTOR SO THATS NO THE PROBLEM DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT MIGHT BE WRONG CAUSE IVE BEEN FOOLING WITH THIS FOR TWO HOURS WITH NO LUCK HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you have a dual cable system? When you pulled the cable off the back of the helm, did the steering wheel turn easy? Either you have a bad helm or a bad cable.

the wheel turns fine when the cable is out.The thing is it turned before it was just kind of tite now it wont turn i fed it back in and the wheel turns as it is fed in but once it gets all the way in there is no give in any direction

Does the cable move free at the motor .Mine was stuck there and it stripped the steering box. It usually gets stuck on the motor end.

ill go check should i be abe to move the cable with my hands when it is pull out of the steering box

so i loosened the cable at the motor and when i pulled it out the steering wheel turned the motor seems to be locked up.so i dont think the cable is bad any advice anybody

Sounds like the steering rod is gummed up with old grease that's gotten hard. ????

now you got to pull the cable out of the motor and clean it ,as well as the tube it goes in on the motor. Take your time and spay it with wd 40 or some type of oil . You will probably have to tap on it to get it out . FYI the grease fitting on the motor does not lube the steering cable.

ya its the the steerig rod on the motor once i detached the cable it and the steering wheel moves and i detached the motor from the steering rod and it moves so im bonna tap the steering rod out of its casing and clean it thanks fo the advice everybody

Spray it with PB Blaster or Kroil, after it moves freely pull rod way out wipe off good & put some Antiseize on it

I have been throught this a couple of times and took some picture. Hope this helps.

The way the steering rod goes through pipe on the engine.....it is not lubercated on my engine. A few years ago, I found the inside of this pipe was all rusted up and the rod just would not move to turn the engine. I cleaned it out as best I could and greased up really good.

Then a few months ago the steering got fairly hard to turn so I took it apart again. This time I found the steering rod was bent fairly bad. I guess I hit too many stumps and logs going too fast.

Mr Gerald mine was so bad that I had stick a old bolt through bolt hole on the rod & put a small nylon choker on both side of the bolt then put a 4' choker around a tree & use a come-a-long to get it out! It was STUUUUCK!!!

I understand they make a special nut that has a grease fitting on it that should keep this steering rod geased and prevent this from happening.

I went to West Marine but they stopped stocking this part. Guess I need to go to a boat dealer to see if they have it.

If I would have found the pipe to be rusted again...... I was going to get a "honner" tool to really cleanup the inside of the pipe.

Saw that.....hey whatever works! Have done similar a few times using wood to keep from damaging a part.
Until I get mad & break out the maul!!! :)

I used a brass brush from my 12 ga cleaning kit .I cut down a cleaning rod and put it in a drill .Cleaned it up pretty good. The lube nut is called a cable buddy made by davis instruments. http://www.davisnet.com/marine/produ...asp?pnum=00420
