Clear Creek WMA

I hunted CC WMA 2 years ago with no success. I really liked it though as it is only 1 hour from the house. The public campground is nice but sure could use a bathouse. My son and I hunted over Thanksgiving and then again around Christmas. Hunted pipelines mostly. Plan to hunt there a bit this year as well. Anyone have success on this WMA and want so share some tips?

Where is Clear Creek WMA located? How many acres is this management area?

ScubaLatt 07-28-2010 12:29 AM

It is located just north of Merryvile, LA and just West of Leesville, LA and comprises appx. 57,000 acres.

I did some scouting back in the spring and again this past Saturday. I will be hunting it this year for the first time. Let's just say that I am pumped about what I have found and cannot wait until bow season gets here.

clear creek produced alot of deer last year but if you really want to get pumped up, go to jackson Bienville. its three hours from lake charles and the deer ratio to hunters is like 4 to 1. ive done really good there and on opening day it sounds like WW3

Clear creek is about 5 minutes from my house

I have hunted Jackson Bienville two years in a row. Did not see much but did manage a 125# doe last season with a lethal 325 yard shot to the chest. She ran 25 yards and curled up in a clearcut where I easily found her. Stepped it off from my ground blind and was amazed that it was that far. I did not hunt opening day either year but did hunt Sun PM, Mon, Tue. Beautiful place just wish I had more time to scout it out. Friends tell me Red River is the place to be now.

We have a big crew of about 35 guys going from BayouBucks September 18 to hunt the opening weekend at CC. Some of us are staying at a RV park by anacoco lake and others are staying at the wma. I never hunted there but I will be there early Friday before it opens to scout it. If you are up to it come meet us out there.

I've spent a fair amount of time at CC aka Boise. The deer tend to move around a good bit due to the clear cutting. The good bucks will usually only step out on a pipeline during the rut.

I liked to hunt thick areas of short pine that edged up to hardwood or water. Find some variety in the terrain. When gun season starts the deer will move so if you can find travel routes, bottlenecks. It's a good idea to hunt all day at that time of year.

It's really easy to move around in those hills compared to the swamp bottoms I hunt in Sherburne now.

I'll be there either Thursday afternoon or early Friday morning.

Oh, and I also hunt Red River. Awesome hunting there too. I usually just hunt the late muzzle loader season in January.

I Turkey hunted this spring......A lot of timber was cut after hunting season closed.

All I can say is you better scout to see if "your" spot is still huntable.

Two of my spots....are bare ground.

Latt.....there is a good deer population there. Just need to be in the right spot.

Here is my last kill [can't allways wait for the big boy to come out] at CC. and a few pictures from 10-19-09.

The rubbing and scraping starts in late September at CC.

That is only a few of the ones I saw.

Pictures of the campground on opening day of Gun hunt last year.

LaAngler 07-28-2010 11:13 PM

man those pictures bring back some memories, we used to get stupid on that campground...lol

RaginCagin 07-29-2010 07:58 AM

Nice pics. Gerald. I'm not big on hunting piney woods but it gives me a chance to hunt 2 weeks before our bow season starts in our club so i will be there. Everyone I have talked to said the deer dont really show up to the acorns early in the season and that they are in the pine plantations. dont know how true that is though?

cricket 07-29-2010 12:02 PM

man that does bring back some good ole memories. We hunted that place hard. I remember this one trip we saw these guys arrested for having drugs on them and i saw the game warden shaking a fat bag of mary jane in the guys face. the guy was hand cuffed and sitting on a log. the next day the state police came and had his camper towed off. then i remember this guy throwing his buddy a birthday party and hired stippers to come out and perform. they hung tarps in a big circle and anything went. the women that were in the camp ground were pissed. But we had some great times out there.
