.308 or .30-06
 

which one would be better...im getting a remington pump rifle for christmas from my ole lady....i been wanting one cause they are ideal guns for swamp hunting and running dogs and thats mostly all the deer hunting i can do right now...the ole bolt action is just to slow...for me anyways...so wich one of these calibers and why?

I know this prolly aint what you wanna hear, but if thats what your using the gun for and in that terrain. I would go with a trusty lever action marlin 30-30. ideal for that

I have a remington pump, trust me you'll love it. Have had mine since '91. I have a few rifles & thats the one that goes with me 90% of the time!

30-06 or .308? 6 one way half a dozen the other. Me personally I like the short actions, but you can't go wrong with either.

30-06. Easier to find the loads you may be looking for, reguardless of your location. Small mom and pop stores that may have a small selection of ammo will have 30-06, 308 is a might have. Both are great hunting rounds and are very versital for hunting whitetails, elk or moose. You may be hunting whitetails in the brush now, but you never know what or where you may be hunting in 5 plus years from now. Just my 2 cents worth. Also, don't underestimate a 270.

I have a Tikka T3 in .308 I bought for my 11 year old. I shot a buck Sat with it and it blew the heart up. I was shooting 150 grain Winchester Power Max. .308 has almost no recoil and drops em were they stand if you do your part. If you buy more than one box of ammo and buy 2 more every time you open the last box you will have no problem finding bullets.

one of the most deadly rounds i have used is a 308 corelokt 150 grain. i have a dpms chambered in 308 thats my hog gun. 308 corelokts punish.

i bet .308 comes close to outselling 30-06 ammo wise, market for battle rifles expanded.

it probably does but when most people stock ammo they buy the 7.62x51. you can get better deals on the older stuff.

I would say the .308. Less kick so you can get another shot off faster and hunting dogs you are sometimes in crazy positions to shoot.

The 308 is a very proven round like the 3006. The 06 will shoot farther and pack more of a punch, the 308 does great but doesn't kick as hard as the 06. I have both of my boys (1-10 1-14 ) shooting a 308. We use the hornidy mags 144 grain with ballistic tips. The both have green mountin barrels on rem 700's and both guns produce 2-3" groups at 200 yrds.

both are slightly different versions of .300 caliber bullet. Kick, trajectory etc are really based on what load you use. A couple of comments though:

'for my ole lady'? if this guy is for a woman, my opinion is that is way too much gun for a woman. Recoil will absolutely affect her shooting. These are elk calibers and way more than what you need for deer.

If I could only buy one caliber rifle to hunt anything in N.America, it would unquestionably be .270. Faster, flatter, lighter recoil and will take down anything other than Grizzly in the US.

if you are actually going to shoot THRU brush, or palmettos etc, just about any bullet other than a slow moving slug , will be affected.

Have hunted with dogs since I was a small child. Started with a 20ga as a kid and moved up calibers through the years. One thing is a constant you always go back to the caliber that works best for you(aka "the one your luckiest with"). For me the 280rem is my gun of choice, with the 270 a close second. Have killed more and bigger deer with 12ga buckshot, but it has it's place. It's very hard to explain dog hunting to most people, they kind of look at you crazy the night before thier first dog hunt telling them what is going to happen and what to do. It's a dying sport with smaller clubs and all the other BS. Oh ya, 308 all the way, just my opinion- good luck this season.

In my younger days when we ran dogs up around Amite La. I used a Ruger .44 Mag auto. Light, short and would reach out well over 100 yards. If you find one it would be a fine choice but that are rare. 240 gr hollow points do an amazing job on anything. I use a .270 but also have a .30-.06 and love both.

They probably can't run dogs either anymore!

I'd say the 308 would give a shorter throw since it's a short action rnd., allowing slightly faster follow-ups.
