Bird seed for a food plot?

We have a DWF guy who works with us every now and then, and he swears by planting bird seed in food plots. He said that it is cost effective and works very well. He says that a lot of them guys use it and it is grows very well. Anyone ever heard of this?

I've heard of a few people doing this but never tried it for myself

There are 3 main types of birdseed. Black oil sunflower, thistle, and mixed. Sunflower is good for bow season deer especially. They love the stuff but no one I know plants this in Louisiana. Don't plant thistle seed. Most mixed birdseed is predominately millet. There are minor amounts of milo, cracked corn, sunflower, and other small grains. Mixed birdseed should grow a weedy stand of millet. Not a bad idea; its a lot cheaper than any plot mix you'll find.
