35GTR or 25GTR?

So with our mudbuddy stolen I'm buying a Gator Tail now sooner than I thought. I'm torn between the 35hp and the new Subaru 25hp EFI. The only reason that I'm considering the 25hp is the EFI. Maybe it's me but you don't seem to hear as many issues with motors and ethanol on the EFI outboards and I won't miss having to warm up a carbed motor on those cold mornings. We don't have a long run at my duck leases and I will be keeping my 25hp Tohatsu for fishing. The gator tail will sit in the shop outside of gator and duck seasons. I'll be putting this on my 16x42 Southfork tunnel which I realize is less than ideal for a surface drive however it's what I have so it's what I'll be using. Am I stupid for considering going with less power. My concern would be pushing the boat full of gators. I know with the EFI atvs they seem to be more powerful along with better throttle response than the same size carbed motor. Why can't Gator Tail go to EFI on the 35's like Prodrive?

CajunChristian 08-18-2014 06:48 AM

I have never heard anyone complain because of too much power, I have had hundreds of complaints of too little power.
EFI is the only way to fly. If not, why are there no carbbed automobiles left in production?

GTR

The 35 EFI is coming! Only way I'd get a 25 is due to hp restrictions.

go big or go home

Goooh 08-18-2014 07:19 AM

^^ and don't run ethanol

jldsc 08-18-2014 08:27 AM

I just wrote a huge paragraph on it and it disappeared....Shoot me a pm for any questions you might have...I run a modded 35gtr and have been top to bottom inside and out of it....you not gonna like either of those motors on that boat!! And for what your doing the 25 isnt gonna have the load carrying ability...on the other hand the 35 briggs lacks the dependability of the efi as it is plagued with problems...EFI is coming out for the 35's and you can get EFI from prodrive for the 35gtr for about 1800-2000$ extra.

to me choosing what motor to go with is not as important as getting a better boat...try selling that tunnel hull and get a 17/46 slick bottom southfork and it should do decent with the 25gtr

Tunnel hull is pointless for a surface drive.

Shawn Braquet 08-18-2014 10:26 AM

I hear you on the tunnel hull being pointless. I will upgrade boats but the motor will come first to avoid burning up my outboard. I've ran a surface drive on a tunnel hull and realize the lack of performance. I did still get to my duck blind however. I'm trying to get something before duck season so unfortunately I can't wait for EFI on the 35 because I'm hearing a 3 month lead time on motors. About to make a few phone calls after lunch.

To me if losing 3-4 mph by going with the 25hp vs the 35hp is the deal then I'd rather the dependability of the EFI'd 25hp. My plan was to get the motor this year, then next year the motor and trailer and put my Tohatsu back on the tunnel hull and have 2 boats.

I think you will loose more like 6 to 8 mph..... with a light load.

I have a 12 x 32 flat with a 6 hp godevil. I only get 9.5 mph with me and my deer hunting stuff. I took another person once and it took twice as long to get to the hunting spot.

35GTR or 25GTR?

It's not about top end to me. It's the amount of torque and power you get when you need it. Loaded down having to get out of some nasty stuff is where that 35 would shine.

Stabilizers and non ethanol fuel should serve you well on a carbed engine - those engines will run for an ungodly amount of time if they are stored properly and kept away from ethanol...

Looking like that's what I'll be doing after talking to Gator Tail.

jldsc 08-18-2014 03:11 PM

Yeah, wish I could wait until January for the EFI 35 but kind of afraid of what the price hop would be.

jldsc 08-18-2014 04:07 PM

well when you get tired of all the stock mess on it get with me and I dont mind helping you out with it and tuning that stock carb for you

Get an efi 36 hp prodrive now and be done.

jldsc 08-18-2014 10:18 PM

either one is still gonna have junk heads...the efi just does a better job at hiding the leaking stock valves

I have the 36 Prodrive. Would not go any other way. I do have a bit of a problem with idleing. From what I've read I'm sure it's because my factory heads are crap. I intend on pulling the heads next year and installing a cam once my warrenty is done.

In your situatation since your just looking for something to get you thru hunting season why don't you just get a used longtail? That would get you by for now cheaply then once the pressure is off for hunting season you can get what you really want later.

It's crossed my mind, had one though and never really liked it on my lease in Vinton. I don't like the added weight of the Prodrive nor the reverse however I do like the EFI.
