Rutherford Beach?

Anyone ever surf fish rutherford beach and catch any specks? I'm sure it can't be that much different than the ones on the west side, just wanted input and/or reports.I'm planing on trying it during teal after my hunts in pecan island. I hate crossing the ferry it kills me which is the reason i want to explore rutherford beach.

I have been to Rutherford's a few times.....but not when there has been clear water [ie. North wind]. I think I only fished there one time hoping to catch a Bull Red. I have heard that is a good spot for them.

Every time I was there, the water was very very dirty because of an east or southeast wind blowing the Mermentau river water that direction. The mouth of the river is only about a mile east of there.

When the water is clear, it is good. When there is floating grass it is better.
I have a cousin who lives on the beach. I call her for water conditions before
I go. About a month ago, they had good luck for a week, then it turned muddy.

Water is key. We used to go shoot clay's and catch bull reds during duck season to kill time. I have heard of guys catching trout there, but very hard to get right conditions.

Bull red daddy! The bull reds were stacked up by that ole sunkin shrimp boat but never caught trout

Speaking of bull, if anyone is on Rutherford and runs into a guy named Bull, you better hope he is on your side.

Rutherford Specks

I owned a camp there given to me by my Grandfather, sold it in 2004. Anyway, grew up fishing there and I have never caught bigger specks anywhere than in the surf at Rutherford. I never caught a lot, usually 2-4 was a good day. But 7 pounders were common. The conditions are ideal anytime the surf is not rough. Remember, specks love muddy water. Live mullet under a popping cork in knee deep water was the ticket. A neighbor there from New Iberia used to catch a lot more than me, but usually smaller fish, they fished artificials mostly. July-September is the best time, I never did much good once it cooled off.

Fished down there for about 10 years before RITA hit. Did well on almost every trip we went. Live mullet is the trick. The 2 largest specks I ever caught came from there. (7.0 and 7.2) North wind is the best but the water does not need to be clear to catch fish there. It is entirely different from fishing the rocks, the water gets deeper faster. When fishing a high tide fish between the first and second sand bar, when the tide is out fish between the second and third sand bar.We fished with a 2oz weight on the bottom and a 10" tag line up about 18 to 24"s off the bottom using a 2/0 to 4/0 hook.

I haven't been back since RITA but have been thinking of giving it a try again sometime soon.

Whenever you want to go Corey, but the same rules apply. ;) NO COMPLAINING if we don't catch. Remember, it's been 6 years since I've been there.

We "WILL" have fun!

southern151 08-27-2011 06:14 PM

Did I complain last time when you put me in the bad spot so you could do all the catching?! Lol! Just kiddin!

Dink 08-27-2011 06:22 PM

Never have caught a trout there, but cut mullet on the bottom on the sandbar will get ya bull red after bull red

evidrine 08-27-2011 06:36 PM

Good question. I've been there before but never fished it. I always think about trying it but never do. I think I may give it a try next time out.

The first trip will be exploratory. If you don't mind that, when do you want to make a trip?
