About to start

Ok guys, after the hunt yesterday with R Little, I got to thinking about buying a few calls on the drive from LC to my house. Whats a good starter call ? One to get me started learning the basics... I wanna eventually get to where i can call pintail, specks and mallards like R Little and Capt D can.... Fill me in on some information. Im not looking to spend $1,000 on calls... just a starter call, and then i'll move up from there..

longsidelandry 01-04-2010 11:16 AM

You can buy some that come with instructional cd's or dvd's, I would get something like that to start with.

Jordan 01-04-2010 11:34 AM

yeah, think im gonna do that and drive down the road blowing my call with the CD on !!! think it would sound good on my system ross ?? hahaha

longsidelandry 01-04-2010 11:35 AM

lol Man I don't know how much bass they have on those CD's

Jordan 01-04-2010 11:40 AM

imma find out !!!

Haydel DR 85

Ray 01-04-2010 11:55 AM

Haydel is one of the best, most durable duck calls. Them and Faulks have some
good instructional info.
In my opinion, the wood and cane calls sound better, but the water, moisture and
spit will affect it's sound after a while.

adamsfence 01-04-2010 12:03 PM

you tube also has some good instructional videos i use them alot

"W" 01-04-2010 12:29 PM

a game caller with a mallard tape....get the tape with a 1000 mallards on the water quacking....... Try that out and report back

Jordan 01-04-2010 12:33 PM

will do.... im gonna make it my goal, to get pretty good at duck calling, i dont like just "riding along and shooting" i wanna do a little of the work when im on a duck hunt. Im not fortunate enough to have a ducks lease, and all we have up here are wood ducks, and they dont come to a call or cup to a decoy spread. So if the chance ever arises for me to go on another hunt, i'll have the duck calling under my belt. Thanks for the ideas and opinions guys !

I have a shoe box ful of calls Jordan you can take your pic of.;)
Let me know when you will be in LC next and I will Hook a BROTHER UP.

Jordan 01-04-2010 12:42 PM

Robert, i appreciate the offer, but i dont want to be a welcher. This is all new to me and i want to try and learn things on my own. I want to buy my own calls. If i get in a bind i'll let you know...Also, I want to listen to people who've been doing it their whole lives, and i want people to hollar at me when i do things wrong... Its going to take time, but im working on a dream !!! Its my dream to be good at calling and shooting. I got the shooting down pretty good, im still a young pup kinda in a way, because i get too excited and try to shoot 20 birds with 3 shots... You did teach me something good, pick a bird, kill it and pick another bird... I APPRECIATE THE INFORMATION and guys, if ya'll see anything that needs to be pitchen in about waterfolw hunting, do so... i always listen !!!

specktator 01-04-2010 04:04 PM

DR 85 is definitely the best cheap call to start with. I have a $100 mallard call next to my DR 85 but still the 85 is the first one I draw. It's $25

Wag 01-04-2010 04:20 PM

Haydel all the way .... DR 85 and for specks Haydel S81,

Very easy call to blow. Also, look the the Primos high roller call. It is good for Pintal, Mallard Drake, and green wing teal. It sells for $ 15-20.
I have the Dirty rice and red leg calls by Haydel. Both are inexpensive and easy to use.

huntin fool 01-04-2010 04:29 PM

Just get the zink ph2 polycarb that comes with a dvd...I'll give you my dvd. Better than a Haydel hands down.

Its like 25 bucks with dvd and call, Just buy the call and i'll give you the dvd.

Fixed it for ya.;)
Agree with Haydel's, stay away from DC calls(not for the beginner),don't need any highend calls yet(RNT,ect). Would start with a double reed (dr85) and learn to hit the notes perfect before gradatin.
All my calls have baca juce inem, that's how I gettem to purrrrr like I do.:D
Don't even think about a Chein Caille yet!!!!!
