Terry Shaughessy??

Sitting here reading a book at the camp in Cocodrie and came across a line by Terry Shaugheesy in the Book Specks by Todd Mason. Terry is quoted by saying he has caught over 5,000 trout OVER 8lbs in his lifetime:eek:

Any Old Timers can comment on this......... My Dad has told me some story's about some good trout trips he saw with Terry were most were over 5lbers

Well we fished together or in the same area for many year's. I guarantee that he's probably caught that many easily. To further his testimony and if you were fortunate to be in the boat with him he would do whatever it took to make sure you caught the quailty fish as well.I could go on about in many aspect's of our many year's of freindship i share when he was here. I 've really missed him and his fishing show.He is one of the true legends of our estuary.

I would believe 500, but 5000? I'm not sure where all Terry has fished his whole life, but in the Calcasieu Estuary, my experience tells me that the ratio of 8lb fish to the general fish population is relatively small. So to catch 5000 8lb fish in a lifetime, you would have had to of caught at least twice that many that weighed 7 lbs, which would be 10,000. And the ratios would go up exponentially from there. Like 25,000 6 lb fish. 40,000 5 lbs. 100,000 4 lb fish. 200,000 3 lb fish. Maybe 800,000 2 lbs and under? That adds up to 1,180,000 fish. So if he fished an average of 300 days a year, for 60 solid years, that would add up to 18,000 days of fishing. Now I think I'm being generous because fishing isn't the only thing Terry's done over the last 60+ years. But if he fished those 18,000 days, he would have to personally catch an average of 65 fish a trip. Any honest fisherman is going to tell you that's really hard to do. I'm not calling Terry a liar, but the math and experience tells me that's a tall order. Anybody agree?
