Fishing big lake this weekend.

Hey, think I'm going to be able to haul the boat down this weekend.

Planning on fishing west cove and launching off 27, I think that's hog island.

Does anybody have any tips? And where can I grab some bait on that side?

Slicers Marina in Hackberry will have live bait. You may want to get a small aerator that you can attach to your bucket or icechest to keep those shrimp alive. They aren't too cheap! Good luck

OK thanks. I'll have to look at the map. I didn't realize there was a launch directly into west cove.

Will probably fish shrimp and gulp free and poppers. And try some artificials. Been a long time since I have been in big lake with a boat.

Hey, looking at the website. I'm not an LA resident any more. Do I need to buy a non res fishing, and saltwater? Or just non res. Saltwater.

live shrimp has been the best last few days. Live mullet and shad work well too. definitely need aerator. yes u can launch in the west cove canal launch. short cut takes u directly to south west side of west cove. I got to spicers at 645 am this morning and they were already out of live shrimp. On weekends right now u may have to be there at 430 to get em. they sold 3 tanks full this am. no live shrimp at cal point yet. Heberts has been having some. they close at noon and not sure if open at 5 or 6.

Mem, could you point a feller in the direction of catching a few pogies? Calc Point area?

Dang! We'll have to get there early. Don't have a livewell. Will just have to throw them in ice water.

If they run out of live do they have frozen?

Flex, buy a simple aerator with battery and a large minnow bucket or try to keep them alive in an ice chest with the lid open. Might need to put a bag of ice in there. Shrimp die pretty quick in hot water with no aerator. You can get frozen shrimp at most stores along Hackberry Highway. Cormie's on Country Club road certainly has then, but that is the wrong side of the lake for you. I am pretty sure that Spicers has frozen shrimp as well. You probably won't have as much luck with frozen shrimp. Fish are pretty picky about live shrimp. Watch the tides and you can probably pick up fish along the entrances to West Cove from the ship channel and across the ship channel near 9 mile cut. If that doesn't work, fish the points off of the ship channel around Monkey Island (near the Cameron Ferry). Live Shrimp normally do well there with tidal movement. The wind looks pretty favorable this weekend. If you launch in West Cove, there is normally a pretty good reef in the south part of Big Lake that will probably have a lot of boats in the early morning around it. Just look for the big group of boats. That is usually a good reef in the summer. Good luck.

Spicers has the live bait buckets ready to go., the chlorine in the ice will kill the shrimp. u can use a little to keep cool if have to but if u buy the live bait bucket that will be all u need. Well u will need two D size batteries. will work with one but put two works better. u definitely don't want to spend $18 for a qt of shrimp and not have them in aerator. Also I went thru a quart of shrimp in no time Wednesday due to all the undersized fish. If u get live shrimp and aerator and fish above mentioned areas u should have plenty of trout action. Also trout are usually all up and down the west bank by ferry and pogy plants this time of year. I have not smoked them yet this year with all the fresh water but its only a matter of time. water is looking better down there and action should pick up any day now. good luck and be sure to post how u did.

I had been catching my pogies straight across from cal point. on that north bank is a channel marker and just behind that is a pipe where water is pumped or drained from otherside. pogies were so thick in there one cast with the net was more than u need. idk if it was 4th july holiday or if I was just too early as I got there before daylight on the 5th of july and they were not there. but I didn't try long cause when I called spicers they had plenty live shrimp so I went that route instead. there is a popular wade fishing spot down by pogy plants that has a small cut that drains water from marsh on otherside of hwy. I caught all the pogies I wanted there later that day. all up and down the banks of the ship channel should have pogies . today was loaded with finger mullet everywhere. idk if it was full moon or wat but just could not get them today. caught 3 trout and a flounder down there off bank by ferry. be back in boat sunday. good luck

Also instead of adding ice to the water in live bait bucket its better to just change the water out. keep bucket as full as u can and keep pouring fresh water in it thru out the day and shrimp will stay alive. never use soap or bleach to clean that bucket., I didn't rinse good and killed my shrimp going surf fishing one morning last year. get there and all shrimp were dead. and I rinsed it out. so I just use water in my live wells in boat and bait buckets now.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Will definitely post results. Any of y'all use gulp? I've never tried them but here in TX people love them.

I'll be fishing Saturday thru Tuesday.
