What are your favorite tires?

I have a two wheel drive Ford 150. Not looking for mud tires, but I would like an aggressive A/T. What are your suggestions? Will probably be shopping in the next year or two.

there are BFG all terrains on here for sale.. good tires for good price.

Clampy 03-25-2015 09:17 AM

Toyo A/T

Duffy.yyz 03-25-2015 09:22 AM

My tires are only a year old...Can't justify buying 'new' ones yet.

MathGeek 03-25-2015 09:25 AM

I didn't try them all, but I never found an all terrain tire that worked well off road. A good pair of mud tires and a locking differential will enable a 2WD pickup to go places most 4WDs with all terrain tires can only dream about.

A good 4WD (ensures torque to all 4 wheels) with mud tires can do some impressive things. I used to pull a 7000 lb trailer (loaded with hay or spent brewers grain or fencing materials) through all manner of snow and wet pastures to get the job done.

I have been VERY impressed with the 2WD locking differential, with stock tires! It is an awesome feature on the 2014.

This. Or the M\T if you want something more aggressive.

Top Dawg 03-25-2015 10:40 AM

I bought the hankook ATMs before hunting season and so far so good. And pretty decently priced.

This is probably close to what you want if you stick with an all terrain. Less agressive tread designs don't do as well off road.

You need an agressive tread design to do well off road and a chemical compound to have the right mechanical properties to grip the road well and reduce highway noise.

Look at the tread gaps of the tires you consider. If the gaps are smaller than these, move along as off road performance will suffer.

I run goodyear wrangler M+S silent armor on my 4x4...No road noise and pull great...Too aggressive a tire and you'll dig a hole and bog yourself in...

Thanks guys

i had Nitto m/t on my last truck, 4door f150, rotated every other oil change and they lasted me over 65k miles, very good tire imo.

I have had consistent wear from Nitto and Toyo,.

Got the same mileage as you out of a set of MT's and a set of all terrains in Nitto on a half ton, Just replaced a 65k mile set of Toyo AT's on a 3/4 ton too.

Great value, performance and consistency.

The best all terrain performer may be the BFG KO's but they can get pricy and I'm not sure of wear life.

Duffy,

Keep in mind when looking at anecdotal wear life scenarios on tires, as well as buying, that tires do have a shelf life and it's easy for a very old set to be sold to you at a great price...

The problem is if they stay in a warehouse for years the rubber has degraded even if they have been out of the elements. This can create shorter service life as well as a safety hazard for you. There have been law suits over tires failing, and people have died - the most recent case I'm aware of was a group of teenagers rolling on a fresh set to senior trip, multiple fatalities.

Think of a rubber band sitting in a drawer for a few years, ever seen a rubber band that you pulled out of a drawer after it's been there forever with little to no use on it? It's dry rotted and ain't worth a plate of cold grits. This happens with tires.

Below is a link to help you identify the age of the tires you are looking at. Call it nit picky, but I'll pay a little more for a newer set of the same exact tire if it eliminates me being a one in a million statistic.

I had Goodyear Duratracs on a Landcruiser for 50k miles. They were priced lower than most and had alot of tread left when I sold it. I'd buy them again.

Nickt87 04-15-2015 11:11 AM

I'll tell you what ones I DO NOT like, Bridgestone Deuler HT. They come stock on a lot of Tundra's and F150s. Wore extremely uneven, and lasted half the life they were supposed to.

cajunforeman 04-15-2015 03:35 PM

I have toyo at2 on my toyota and they do pretty well. I would of went with the MTs but i drive it on the highway a lot.

Will"E"Fish 04-15-2015 08:34 PM

Yup ToyoAT2 on my 4 wheel drive and would most likely buy them again.
