This weekend was not that great for the most part for us. I hunted with 5 guys in Klondike and we hardly saw any birds. The few we did see acted like we weren't there. We had one group come in and give it up and my guys dropped 5 nice generals. That was all we had even give us a good look. My dad hunted in Welsh and killed 3 specks and 1 canada. Another blind was hunted in Welsh and they killed 1 speck.

Sunday I hunted with my cousin and my buddy and we killed 2 specks and a canada in Welsh. My dad hunted 1/4 mile from us across the road and they killed 12 specks. Every bird that came over my field was fixed straight in on him without any calling at all. It's amazing how much they know exactly where they are going right now.

The hunting seems to be tough everywhere from what I understand. I hope we get some new birds before this weekend. I'll be going to Morgan City to stay at a friends camp to hunt ducks.

Yea it is. We hardly ever hunt bean fields because almost all of the birds will shy off the blind at the last minute and you can't finish them good. The birds had been using the field so he went and got in it and they came right to him. He barely had to call

We hunted our welsh blind on Monday and killed 4 Snows and Blues. We were fortunate to kill that. The specks did not respond at all to the set or the call. As a matter of fact we picked up the set, because it seemed to be flaring the birds. Unreal how unresponsive they were. We had 18 GHG Full body specks and shells out too. Not bad dekes.

Cody, what kind of a set do ya'll use for Specks? How many dekes, what type of pattern?

We only use ghg full bodies and only the fully flocked ones. For the first split and beginning of second, we were using 18 in welsh and 12 in Klondike. We picked up 2 more dozen and put a dozen in Klondike and a dozen in welsh. We don't put them in any certain pattern, just observe how the specks are sitting on the ground. We put them out to mimick what we are seeing. As far as snow decoys, we put about 8 full bodies out if it's foggy and that's it. We never put out snow decoys if we are hunting specks. The only time I put them out this year, I put out all 5 dozen full bodies we had plus the 2 dozen specks in Klondike. The birds that broke can right in to the spread. Once I broke em, I could put my call down and just let the dekes work. Next time they flare off your decoys, pull them all up but 2 or 3 and see how that works for you

Yeah, I was gonna leave just one or two out. We ended up doing like the Indians though and staked out our dead geese on the ground. It didn't hurt, but it didn't help either. I think the larger problem for us is that the field where the dekes were has been eaten by the geese. They seemed to be avoiding it like the plague, since they have torn it up.
