Pulling Poppet Valve

Has anyone done this? How much trouble is it? I bought a 200hp Vmax that seems to be pumping good and water stays cool coming out of peehole but I have read and was told its common on this motor to get trash that will block the valve and not give a pressure reading on gauge. I plan to pull and clean poppet, thermostats and flush engin with them out but curious if there is anything else to look at or watch for in duing this.

If your going to tear it down, then just replace it, the spring gets weak over time, I just changed mine & the spring had 1/2 the tension as the new one. I did mine when I had the powerhead off to replace head gaskets.

I found some info on BassBoatCentral and it don't look like a bad job but I havenever fooled with one

if you disconnect the water pressure conection on top of block should there be a stream of water just lightly coming out when at idol or should it be squirting out pretty hard kinda like pee stream?

Are you taking the hose off the fitting or taking the fitting out of the block?

hose off fitting, would the water temp as far as wether or not the thermostats or open or closed effect this... I know I have a lot of questions but I want this to work right and understand why it works how ever it does.

Are you having issues with your motor? What year motor?

2005 VMAX, not really trouble with motor as it runs great and after 30min of running on water hose it stays cool but I can't get a reading on pressure gauge. I am thinking about just changing gauge but I was told that there is a good chance the poppet has trash in it. The gauge will not move idleing or running off "0" but I also notice that if I disconnect gauge line at engine it does not look like much water pressure there, it does have water pushing out of fitting and it runs down engine but I thought it would have pressure there like at pee-hole, am I thinking right or should pressure be less on top at fitting?

flounder_smacker 11-23-2011 07:06 AM

You won't have hardly any pressure showing on your gauge when running on the hose.

flounder_smacker 11-23-2011 07:10 AM

Also it's not I wouldn't run my engine on the hose for that long as the water pressure usually isn't enough to keep cool water on the top cylinders.

X2! Never run your motor on the hose that long!

Thats a no-no :shaking: to run off of the water hose connection...

You must use muffs to run off the hose with, and they make some for the low water pickup lower units...

well I am glad to know this now and will remember in future but it was not just continues running, I was cutting it engine on and off and blowing air back down fitting and lettin it drain then flushing with engin on and off but I never noticed any change in water comin out of fitting during all this time so does anyone know or has anyone tried disconnecting their gauge at the fitting to have an idea of what water pressure wouldlook like at idol?

Who wants to but a motor cheap? :-)

Yup. It should like it has 10-17lbs of pressure. Unless you have the motor turned then it should be 10-12lbs of pressure. :-). Lmbo

I had a wet guage on mine and it would not show any pressure @ idle, running above 3k on to WOT would be between 10-12 psi if I remember correctly...

When was the water pump changed last?
