Best trolling motor?

Here it goes again!!! What is the most reliable trolling motor? Riptide or Great White? I'll be buying a new boat this coming spring! Just wondering what you'll think!

I have an 80# Riptide PRO.

I have a Great White on a 22' Tunnel Champ and never have liked it. It is now 8 years old but has always sounded louder in the water than the Minn Kota's .. Just my experience with them.

Those with Minn Kotas or Motorguides, how many years have you been running your motor with no problems? I have a 101 lb 36 Volt Riptide with 3x steering. It pushes my boat real well. But, I have only had it for 2 years. I have a great white 24 volt that is still running with no problems for 8 years. I heard from many people that Minn Kotas are better!

not very long with the riptide i have. but i think i had a lemon everytime i go out it breaks something. its only 2 to 2 1/2 years old

I love my Great White....

Nasty 07-11-2009 08:03 PM

Thats interesting to know adamsfence. How old is your motor guide "W"?

Salty 07-11-2009 08:04 PM

This is kinda like asking...Ford or Chevy? Everyone has their preference. I've had nothing but MotorGuide but some of my buds have Minnies and they love 'em.

Nasty 07-11-2009 08:19 PM

I agree salty-- very much like ford/chevy. But, I'm wondering if I could hear something to make up my mind either way.

Let, me see, did'nt they need a bailout??

Look at it this way...what are the majority of motors you see on boats--YAMAHA. What are the majority of Troll Motors you see on boats these days---Minn Kota. I find over the past few years Minn Kota has really overtaken Motor Guide. I think with either one you can get a LEMON.

I have a 2007 Chevy myself. I think OBAMA is the new CEO:*****::*****:

Riptide 3X

The Riptide 3X is a very smooth operating motor; the long handle is very nice for steering. I no longer use my big foot switch since I got the 3X. Motor Guides work well but they have short handles.

Nasty 07-11-2009 09:26 PM

3x steering...

I think its smooth also! But, many people have bashed the durability of the 3x steering. So far, so good with mine. Just wondering why Minn Kota dropped that line of trolling motor?

flounder_smacker 07-11-2009 09:41 PM

motorguide WAS a good motor untill a company named brunswick bought them out. now they are junk just like everything else they put their black hands on.

fishinpox 07-11-2009 10:29 PM

i have the min kota it has broken. 1 time the shaft snapped and the other time it got water in the head and burnt it all up either time it was fixed under waranty a shop in baton rouge offers a stainless shaft replacement it is like 200.00 bucks but mabey it is worth it. but i do think it is quite the ford/ chevy thing ive heard pros and cons of both not sure if the motor guide has this option but with the minn kotas the stering assist is pretty sweet

No composite shafts on MotorGuide.

FlatoutFishin 07-11-2009 11:19 PM

Depends on where you run them and on what boat...(Example)no motor will last on the front of a shallowsport very long(trust me). Transom mount it and they'll last till they rot off.

rosska 07-11-2009 11:51 PM

I have a 36v minn kota and it has been reliable. One thing I do know is the minn kota is quiter than the motor guide. I think they are both good and reliable but I prefer the quieter of the two. That is my opinion.
