Shot placement / Bullet choice
 

I have a question and would like to get everyone's opinion. We hunt in Avoyelles parish and shoot big body deer. Our average 3.5-5.5 yr old buck will weigh 225-265 lbs. The last 3-4 deer dad and I have killed, we have not had a pass through of the bullet, which make them very heard to blood trail and sometimes impossible to find. We try to shoot them braodside in the lungs or heart area, and tend to not take bad shots. He shoots a 270 with 130 grain Hornady SST bullets and I normally shoot a 300. I tend to get pass throughs with my 300, but on Monday of this week, I shot a good 8 pt that weighed 225 lbs with my .308 instead of my 300 and didn't get a pass through. I shot it with a 150 gran Hornady whitetail inerlock bullet. It took us till Tuesday late morning to find the deer with no blood trail. I hit it in the boiler house and destroyed the inside, but didn't have any blood to follow and he didn't drop in his tracks.

What is everyones perfect shot and what type bullet tends to get a pass through? I know our deer are big bodied, but you would expect to have an exit hole if you shoot the deer in the lungs and don't hit any bone.

tell your Dad he just needs to man up, puts some shoulder into his shot so his bullets still have some energy when they hit the deer!
I use 270 130-150 gr bullets, almost always have exit wounds.

I've always heard bad things about a .270 I know 3 different guys who had the same problem, no blood trails even on perfect shots and no pass throughs. I shoot a .7mm wsm and have yet to loose a deer. I shoot 160 grain Barnes triple shock and they drop in their tracks almost every time. I made a bad shot on a doe a few years ago and shot her square in the gut. She dropped but got back up after about 10 seconds of struggling, ran about 50 yards and piled up. I'm a big fan of the neck shot too.

This seems like a subtle brag on how big your deer are compared to our scrawny marsh deer. I shoot a 300 mag so they don't run off and I have to track them in the marsh

Head shots with a .22 are easy when they are staring at the spotlight

I'm no expert, but all calibers you mentioned are sufficient deer killers; it has more to do with bullet type & placement. If no exit wound is present, either your bullet fragmented or you hit heavy bone. I've never had an issue with Remington core-lokt, but there are better bullets (partitioned bullets come to mind). I'm sure others know more about bullets.

Lol. It was a serious question. I though I had missed this deer because of no blood or hair at point of impact. It isn't a good feeling. We just happened to stumble across him Tuesday morning while looking.

Nosler Partition. Federal Premium In 150 grain for the 270 . Great expansion and they stay together. If you want an exit this is the bullet . There are a lot of new (good) bonded bullets but this one has been around a long time and is proven .

I also shoot a 270 but use Remington core lokt. No problems with bullet not passing through.

I usually shoot for a shoulder shot .... take the 4 wheel drive out and those copper bullets cause the bone to explode into vitals .

I shoot nothing but Hornady 139gr sst Superformance out of my 7x57 Mauser for the past ten years I have had maybe 10 deer run and the only run at most 75 80 yds. I go for the high shoulder shot and break the back bone everytime. And it murders them. My 7 year old shot one with same gun this year and she didn't even think about moving.

Yes, in think areas where recovery is difficult, we really prefer the shoulder shot than going for the double lung behind the shoulder.

I'm not good at blood trailing (red green colorblind), so I also prefer a Nosler ballistic tip to expand quickly and enhance rapid incapacitation when all the shot hits is lungs and heart.

Been hunting long enough I've also developed a sense of where deer "want" to go after they get hit. I usually find the deer first by working ahead of the blood trailers just by instinct.

I shot This Kudu shot quartered in his front right shoulder ,u can see where I popped bullet out in pic .... here is the bullet I recovered

My wife shoots the same bullet but 7mm-08 .
We are very pleased with the trophy copper

I started shooting a 338 lapu this year and it hates white tail. I loading a 285 ELD hornady bullet. That one way to knock a 175 # deer on its arse lol

This, We blast some big body Oklahoma deer and shoot nothing but 243 80 Grain Nosler ballistic tip.

The distance has something to do with, as the closer the deer under 50 yards or so never have pass through. Find bullet jacket in the skin of deer. More than that never have problem. I have also nailed plenty of Kansas deer with 243 and they never go far.

So when they close, it is a neck or if a doe she getting it in the head. The 243 is wicked smacking them in the head.

Have a shot a 6mm my entire life. Never have had a problem besides finding ammo.
