All about timing in Dularge

Late January and February in Dularge it is all about timing. It's been a lot warmer this year than last and that has proved to be a positive in terms of the health on our trout population. Last year I was catching trout at this time of the year that had sores on their bellies from sitting in the mud for so long. I'm not seeing that so far. During this time of year I find to catch trout you need a few days of mild temperatures and low wind so the water can warm up and clear up. The reds are best the day or two after a hard front. When that water temperature is around 50 degrees or lower are perfect conditions. This weekend the cold was back and the trout bite was shut down but the reds were hungry. The reds had a bunch of leeches on them indicating they are sitting in the mud trying to stay warm. I like to fish smaller baits which include the bunker Tsunamis swimbait or take a half inch off of a Matrix Shad. Working the baits very slowly produced two days (Saturday and Sunday) of limits on reds. The reds were found on mud flats as soon as the sun came up warming the shallow water. Saturday was an afternoon trip with Lonnie Barr and Leonard Atkins and the reds were stacked on top of each other. Sunday morning Jeff Brown's crew jumped on the Bluewave. We had a slow bite until after 10 and then the light switch turned on. We had the best success on bait shrimp early in the morning but as the sun came up Matrix in Green Hornet and the bunker swimbait took over. If you pick your days you will find success, good luck!

With this nice weather pattern this week, it should be on fire by then.

That is what I am hoping for. Wind forecast is 5-10 so that would make a great day.
