Saltwater fishing beginner needing help

I'm just getting into saltwater fishing and I'd like to get some tips on where I could catch trout and reds within a hour or so from Lafayette. I've been a fresh water fisherman all my life and looking for something new. I just finished building me a boat to fish the marsh but have no clue where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Wow that's a great deal!!! I was referred to this site because of the lack of smartasses but I guess I was misnformed. Thanks bgizzle for the info. Did you mean every evening instead of daring?

Drains is what he meant fish the drains with moving water and you should catch some fish and be out of the wind.

Another good lure is a chartreuse redfish magic spinnerbait fer reds. You will have to keep at it though, the bay can get difficult to fish at times.

So what kind of boat did you build?

It's a 18'6x54" aluminum flat center console with a 90hp yami with hyd jackplate.

That's plenty big enough for inshore fishing.

I'll post pics soon

For specks, you can just fish the cove, which is where the Quintana canal hits the bay. Launch is at Cypermort Point. Glow Psunami or any type cocohoe jig will work.
As long as you don't have a strong south or southwest wind, you should be alright in this area. If calm, you can go around the point to the area known as the hammock.
You can't miss it, all along the north bank, past the camps, boats are all over there
this time of year, weather permitting.

Thanks guys I appreciate the help. But don't stop with the tips because I can use all the help possible

Nice boat.....you can fish rockefeller very easy to learn. Leaving the launch go down till you get to a y take a right and fish past the water control structure on both sides. You can also try the bertrand canal on the left threw the gate. Fish the banks and in the middle. Fish with gulp shrimp on the bottom with a 1/4 oz jighead. The deep lake canals are good too just go slow on low tide the canals get shallow at the mouths.

Thanks. The motor is a 07 model and I just had it rebuilt from top to bottom including the LU. It runs flawlessly. Ryan Vitte rebuilt it for me his shops out of arnaudville,la. Hell of a mechanic, he's not one of those guys that half *** things to get u going quick. He leaves nothing un turned and your motor comes back looking and running brand new. I've dealt with alot of outboard mechanics in the past and he is by far the best I've found so far!! I strongly recommend him for any of your outboard repairs.

I know Ryan used to sell him parts when I worked at the prop shop, very good mechanic. He has a flat with a super fast 40 merc.

Nick1230 10-21-2012 09:22 PM

Yes he was telling me is in the process of tweaking that 40 merc even more now!! He's shooting for 70mph when he's done!! To fast!!

Is the launch in rockafeller by that long gravel road with the 2000 people crabbing?

That is way too fast for a tiller handle on a flat bottom.....If I remember right it runs in the mid 50's fast enough.

Pass up the long road and take the next road on the left, they just repaved the launches they are nice. Went there this afternoon after the saints game for a couple hours caught 7 reds....only saw 2 other boats on the water.
