I was in omaha last week and didn't see this, i suspect not...besides, look at what they are wearing, no purple and gold anywhere, looks like some gators if anything

adamsfence 06-30-2009 02:25 PM

i didn't think so they probly would have been arrested for digging that big ol hole

Feesherman 06-30-2009 02:41 PM

No to mention the hole is the shape of Texas. I suspect it is some kind of chili cookoff in Texas.

Ok, I got the low-down on this pic. This pic was taken last year at the Jambalaya Festival in Gonzales. I believe this pot was to set a new world record as the largest jambalaya ever made. As for the shape of the hole, I have no idea as to why it took that shape. The guys cooking are from LA. The hole must have been W's idea...Eluding to burning Texas.?

I have never seen anyone cooking in a big pot with a fire that has that much "flames" around the pot. There is a lot of unburned wood in the fire.

An open flame is too hot and IMO would start burning what ever they are cooking.

I have always seen the cooking done with "coals" after most of the flames have stopped. Maybe have a fire burning on the side so that more coals can be added later.

Are these guys "Rookies".....that pot looks new.

That pot looks like it is from an old sugar mill.

Well, by the guys squirting lighter fluid all over the wood, I'd say they were just lighting the fire, getting the temp up. As far as rookies, I don't really know but, I'd doubt it. That fastival is bigger than church here. I doubt they'd let a bunch of guys that don't know what they are doing anywhere near that pot. As for the pot looking new, I suspect it was. I'd bet that it was built just to break the record for largest jambalaya. If my memory serves me correctly, I think they put somewhere along the lines of 275 lbs. of meat in it.

I agree with Gerald, you have your fire 'stoked' way before you even put the meat, vedgies etc.. That looks like an act of desparation as evidenced from the guys spraying the lighter fluid. There was some design spray painted on the ground, maybe Texas, maybe not. The backhoe operator wasn't to good either and that stack of firewood wouldn't even build a decent campfire...

southern151 07-07-2009 07:50 PM

They're in the Guiness Book though!! Desperate or not, that's where they wound up. Did you guys enter the contest?:shaking: Go show em up next year!:work::work::work:
